Another Day, Another DL

Like nobody saw this coming: the DC Cab has a busted timing belt sprained elbow, and won’t pitch again this season. According to the WNST text, he’s officially on the 15 day DL.

I have a hunch that we’ve seen the last of him in an O’s uniform. There’s no way he’s worth what he’ll get in arbitration, and AndyMac seems like the kind of guy who’ll take that surplus $5 mil and throw it at a Derek Lowe or an A.J. Burnett. Time will tell…

This has been mentioned in the comments already (thx, guys) but it bears repeating: Erik Bedard has a torn labrum and will be out for the next 6-9 months (minimum).

Wow.

It’s a crazy situation, right? Here’s one of the more measured critiques I’ve read from out in Seattle. I genuinely feel bad for those fans — it’s a damn shame the way this worked out. I’m glad the O’s were on the winning end, sure, but those fans got absolutely screwed.

Elsewhere, Schmuck wonders if perhaps the O’s should re-sign Bedard when the time comes. Such an idea is great for generating blog traffic, not so great for…anything else.

whenever I’m having a bad day I think about the bedard fan and think of the nirvana or pearl jam song it would have inspired 15 years ago

It’s actually a really interesting situation, not worth dismissing out of hand. What’s the harm in offering him a 2-year deal for say, 7 mil, if the Mariner’s non-tender him? It would be so ridiculous if he comes back good from surgery and the O’s have him along with all the prospects they stole from the M’s. It’s not really a huge risk at that money either. Even if he’s #3 starter quality, it’s worth it.

I do feel bad for the Mariners though. They can’t win here. If they tender him for just the one year, it’s a waste of money. If they sign him longer term, it’s too much of a risk. They could offer the same deal I mention above, but I bet, given the choice, Bedard would come back here. Very interesting…
