orioles and nationals mascots do battleI’m on record against the whole idea of a DC-Baltimore rivalry. So, for me, the idea of a “Battle of the Beltway” sounds like fun more than anything else. I like the fact that we have a National League team just 45 mins to the south. Spice of life and all.

That said, I of course expect and demand an Orioles sweep every time the two teams play. The quest begins tonight as the DC Cab himself takes on Odalis Perez.

Fun fact: the O’s have reached 40 wins in June for just the second time in the past ten seasons. The last time it happened was in the fabled first half of ’05. Make of that what you will.

how on earth could you be against a rivalry with a town that has continuously looked down their pathetic white collar noses at a superior city in every aspect of culture?

    d.c. sucks ass

  • neal s

    Niiiiiiice.

Meanwhile, Roch is reporting that Albers has a labrum tear.

  • Tomás

I can’t wait until we all meet up at TaxPayer’s Field tomorrow, what better way for TLC to meet up than to invade someone else’s homefield for once.

But yeah BBM, other than my beloved Caps, DC can sink back into the swamp it was founded on. So much crazy over-the-top patriotism there in any NON-political event, makes them more like North Korea than a real city. Yuck.

  • dan the man

Man o man o man… two of the three Astros pitchers with torn labrums? What the ef…. That’s some really terrible news.

  • Tomás

Dan, and then one of them even chokeslammed their GM.

Man I hope he [Chacon] ends up on the Yankees. Can you imagine it?? The Choke and Ponson in the same bullpen for the House that Usher built.

  • Big Ben's Motorcycle

    real estate – overpriced
    music – overrated
    sports passion – overstated
    food – excellent

  • dan the man

Ahhh this whole night has a bad vibe. Albers done for the year, Fahey back up and in the lineup against a lefty, Cabrera coughing up a quick 2 runs and the magic is over for him apparently, Drew controversy in the comments.. ugh..

The pessimism is rising, so I’ll bow out of the comments until I can add something that’s not just bitching.

  • Big Ben's Motorcycle

so the season’s on rain delay for now. what better time to debate how much better baltimore is than dc?

also can drew fix my internet? it’s been fucked lately.

  • Andrew out of Rochester

Well, the over under was 0.5, and somehow we all lose. Thanks Brandon! Although, for as bad as Fahey-Cabrera is at the bat, the DC Cab is beating up the DC Club pitching, and Adam Jones is making up for the suck with that baserunning. I swear, we’ve got ourselves a hell of a ballplayer there. Even Fahey tried to emulate his stretched basehit. Too bad Fahey is stupid.

Someone tell me where we’re meeting. I went back to New Freedom for the weekend, so just tell me where we’re getting on the metro, Ill be there in my Hagy 34 shirt.

  • Tomás

Am I the only one that thinks “Slapshot” each time Hanrahan comes to the mound for the Nats?

  • Tomás

    “Hanrahan! Your wifes a LESBIAAAAN!!”

  • dan the man

This is one of those games where you feel the O’s just won’t come back.

I never felt good about playing the Nats right now. They’ve sucked and their due, and with Albers going down, they’re really due. Plus you have automatic outs at the 8 and 9 spot, so it’s pretty much 7 against 9. Fuck that. Then you have their best pitcher going tomorrow against Olson. Rivalry or not, I hate losing to the Nats. They suck. We should beat them. And we do in our own ballpark. I’m just about done with Interleague at this point.

9th inning, top of the order, it’s do or die now come on.

  • Andrew out of Rochester

Yeah, I’m done with interleague play, too. Especially with lineups that have Fahey-pitcher. That’s basically giving the game away. And that’s why I felt we lsot. We gave the Nats that game, because everytime we had guys on and 1 or 0 outs, it was Fahey coming up and then Cabrera. I feel good about tomorrow and (shudder) Sunday, though…I think Olson will excel in that large field and perhaps we’ll get a real lineup tomorrow. Of course benching Huff and Scott was a mistake, too…really I lay this one on Trembley, I’ll call it a “rare misstep”.

As for Albers, well, these injuries happen. Every single team is going to lose at least one or two players for a long time if not the whole year, and it’s just part of the game. Do I think we can compensate? If Loewen does well out of the pen, JJ the Boat style, absolutely. Also Bierd could be a revitalizer. It sucks that we’re basically stuck with Burres in the rotation, though, and thats the key hit with this injury…Brian hasn’t looked even close to good in a month.

Anyway, I’m hitting the sack. If its TLC night in DC someone email me: adg8398 AT rit DOT edu

  • neal s

I can’t make it to the DC games this weekend, but I think we should organize at least two TLC nights soon: one here in Mobtown and one down in Bowie to see Wieters play.

  • Mike L

i dont know what is going on. Huff goes 4-5 with 3 doubles against the cubs, then isnt playing. Salazar is doing fine, but we call up fahey, who will never see a major leauge diamond outside of baltimore. it’ll be a cold day in hell the day cabrera makes contact as a hitter.

Andrew said it right as rare misstep by DT. I think he let DCab get a little too banged around late in the game which extended the lead to 2. Mora had been batting .140 for his last 6 games or something, and Huff had the hot bat. Huff shoulda been starting over Mora at 3rd. If they were ready to call up an infielder, why not scott moore? i’m over fahey. he blows. weve dicked around with him, just as long as hayden penn. I’m not sold on either of them, and its time to move on. Is Mike Costanzo ready for some face time if this is Mora’s last year?

Upside: It’s unfortunate that DCab couldnt hit water if he fell out of a fuckin boat, but theres still 2 more games we can take, and then its back home for 4 agaist KC. KC is hot now, so it’s time for them to stumble… to the tune of a 4 game losing streak would be nice.

I cant make it to the DC games either, but I’d love to get together with some of you guys for a game sometime. Anyone going to the Sherrill T-Shirt night tuesday??

  • Andrew out of Rochester

Well, we’ve got Mora next year, too, which is unfortunate. Actually everything about yesterday baseball-wise was pretty unfortunate. So it goes.

I do feel good about tonight and tomorrow, though. I know tomorrow’s Sunday and all, and tonight the Nat’s best starter who already beat us once is going, but I think we can still take this series. And really, as long as we don’t get swept, we’ll still be doing just fine in my countdown to the ASB.

I really can’t get over it though, there was no way putting that lineup out there gave us the best chance to win. Oh well, I guess.

  • Tomás

Yeah I can’t make it tonight either, though I am definitely down for Wieters Night in Kathy Lee’s hometown.

  • Andrew out of Rochester

And, once again, in the words of Yeats:

“The falcon cannot hear the falconer; things fall apart”

Ooooh well, it woulda been a pain to cross maryland four times in 2 days anyway. Neal, make like an organized effort to do Wieters night (and try to make it Tillman-Wieters night) so we can all go and have a good time cheering for the Sox (see, Joe totally wants to do it now)

  • dan the man

I’m heading to NY today for the weekend. I hope things with the Orioles are better by the time I get back.

Looking around the web, Trembley is getting blasted for yesterday’s lineup. It really didn’t make sense. O’s are apparently close to dealing for Felipe Lopez, who, despite what looks like a steroided monster ’05 year, is a bad all around shortstop. Things just aren’t right at the moment. Hayden Penn had another crap start.

The work is not done by a long shot, folks. Compare AAA Pawtucket to AAA Norfolk. Our farm system does not exist at the AAA level, especially with position players. There’s nobody knocking down the door at all.

I miss have Luke, Millar, and Huff in the lineup at the same time.

  • Greg

I hate the term “Battle of the Beltway”. Baltimore is 695, Washington is 495. Not the same thing.

  • Andrew out of Rochester

The whole thing is stupid. I hate listening to Jim Hunter and Don Sutton (shudder). I hate the Battle of the Beltways (plural)…shouldn’t it be like the Battle of the Bay Area or some other fruity name.

There was one other thing that bothered me last night: DT said Mora wouldn’t bunt in that situation because you dont play to tie on the road with your 3 and 4 hitters coming up. I agree in principle, I guess, but I think you bunt to tie with a slumping, old looking Melvin Mora coming up. Obviously he hit it hard, and just was unlucky that it was a GIDP…but Melvin Mora and Kelvin Millar are NOT 3 and 4 hitters.

Anyway, we have a real lineup in there tonight, and I feel good about leaving yesterday’s bitterness at rest.

  • Mike L

8-1! Thats more like it against these clowns. And here comes the rain…

  • Tomás

Ugh…I hate rain-outs, and we still need to finish one with the Pale Hos in like August!

    For all your distraction needs.
Between this event and the Chacon-Chokeslam, the Dugout is swimming in material.

  • Big Ben's Motorcycle

did i just read that last night’s game was the largest attendance ever at nats stadium (at only 39,000 plus)?

man, camden yards had what, ten consecutive years of sold out games after it opened?

must be a misprint, because i heard dc was an unwavering mecca of sports fanaticism.

  • Andrew out of Rochester

Seems like it was mostly Baltimorons heading down there. They said after the rain delay that the DCers all went home, since they love their team and all. Sounded like it was mostly O’s fans, too, based on the Luuukes and the cheers and the Let’s Go O’s stuff going on.

I will say one thing: I like getting the Nats instead of the Phillies, Braves, or Mets. And I like that the mascots fight – I remember when we got the Phils and the Phanatic would fight the bird…it was amusing to me.

Soo, can Guts get us our Sunday series victory? I feel good about it despite the curse, and then tomorrow I feel even better with our regular lineup against the Royals (even thoguh Burres sounds like he’s out…so who pitches?)
