Cabrera Suspended
The mind boggles: the DC Cab has been sent to the garage for six games, for failing to genuflect at the sight of Yankee pinstripes “throwing at” Alex Rodriguez.
Umm…what?
Truly ridiculous.

WOW
…
How is it so hard to understand that the dude is like 6’10″, and so when the ball is released earlier than wanted to, its trajectory is exponentially greater than a pitcher in the same circumstance that stands at 5’10″?
So so so so so so so SO S-T-U-P-I-D.
This is yet another point in why I hate New York more than Boston, the Yankees are the only team that I can realistically see paying off officials. Not like they need to though, they’re bullied into it by the shear irrationality of the NYY’s fans and management.
If this suspension holds, that means he will lose a turn no matter how the schedule shakes out. Which means that our worries about finding starters just got insane.
We have to find one guy for sure (probably Penn to replace Liz), one guy to spot-start for Cabrera, and either keep Sarfate in the rotation (umm…) or find yet another replacement. Unbelievable.
Beyond ridiculous. My hatred for the Yankees knows no bounds.
absolute horse shit.
six games is absolutly fucking absurd. Need we be reminded that in the boston/tampa brawl earlier this year i think only 2 or 3 guys got 5 or 6 game suspensions. some others got one or two. Oh yeah it was BRAWL, and PUNCHES WERE LANDING ON OPPONENTS FACES. Remember when Richie Sexon charged the mound, and threw his helmet at that rangers pitcher? That too was a six game suspension. then following appeal was reduced to five games.
Just do it like football. Fine a guy 25G if you think it was a blatent cheap shot and move on. What about the guy who threw BEHIND Millar yesterday. Wheres his suspension. I guess Millar isnt as pretty as ARod to deem such a penalty worthy.
on a side note…I was at wednesdays…i dont even want to say game, lets go with dissapointment, in yankee stadium. If anyone hasnt been there, make a day out of it and go see it before they blow that bitch up. Go real early, like 3 hours early or you dont get to see monument park like I didnt get too. Kinda bummed. I hate the yankees, but appreciate the history…pre-1996.
the place has an old school feel to it. Oriole Parks landscaping is so pristine and well kept. at yankee stadium you can see parts where the grass is dead, or worn down. the infield dirt is all different colors, and i dont think they even wet it down at all. hell they had guys with rakes raking the infield instead of a tractor. Hank. your a billionaire. spring for a 1500 dollar john deere for these guys. The staduim had a organ player which was neat to do the national anthem, and other rally type things during the game which is cool. and the PA announcer sounded about 126 years old.
The entertaiment though is terrible. i.e. crab shuffle, kiss cam, hot dog race, john denver, guess the year, orioles magic. Nothing they could do came close to entertaining.
Suprisingly enough there was a few other O’s fans around the stadium, and the new yorkers really didnt say anything to us. we stayed till the end, and even walking out no one heckled us, or whatever. maybe they were atleast sensible enough to know that we took 2 out of 3.
It was a surreal feeling at first walking out of the tunnel and seeing the field and the backdrop. Thinking to myself Lou Gerhig gave his speech right there. and Alan Ameche scored a game winning TD in the ’58 championship game over there. Babe Ruth stood propped on his bat in front of that dugout. Roger Maris hit 61 into those seats. George Brett stormed out of that dugout in the pine tar game. If your a baseball fan, and havent been there, go. But i will say once is enough. and go to a day game. the bronx makes baltimore look like candy land.
Mike: the PA announcer is like 96 years old, and his replacement (he’s been sick all year) just emulates him. Also, I’ve only ever had a great time at Yankee Stadium, except that time ARod hit a walkoff grand slam against Chris Ray…
Also, remember that when you’re suspending a starting pitcher, they get 4 days off, so a 6 gamer is really a 1 gamer. And he’ll probably have it reduced, so he might not actually miss any time at all. But what a clusterfuck. The whole thing is just stupid, although Girardi’s insane hypocrisy is really entertaining, from the way he ignores Joba Chamberlain throwing at Kevin Youkilis (and hey…Joba didn’t get suspended) literally everytime he pitches against the Red Sox to how sure he was that Cabs was throwing at ARod to his utter astonishment when someone accused poor, sweet Ramirez of throwing at that old child-raper Kevin Millar.
Whose ready to continue our inching back to .500 in Seattle? I know I am!
yup, Cabrera’s suspension is ludicrous. . .no doubt he’ll appeal, and likely get it reduced, so yes, he may not miss a turn.
glad we’re in Seattle because I think we can pick up some momentum here and not only cross .500, but get above it and stay there. I know, I know, much work to do, and I’m not betting the farm on that outcome, but. . .I’m an optimist.
Hoping too that, even though the trade “deadline” has passed, the O’s don’t put Millar on waivers; he’s a very valuable cog in the current wheel, and I simply love his approach to and execution of the game.
Anyone else see Millar’s quotes about Wednesday? They’re hysterical.
Sample…
Millar said he was “100percent” sure it was intentional. Seething after the game, the loquacious Millar said he wanted to hit a 400-plus-foot home run into famed Monument Park against Ramirez. Instead, Millar used his mouth as retaliation.
“I was upset they threw him out of the game because he’s really good hittin’,” Millar said. “He’s a cute little fella. He doesn’t throw that hard and doesn’t have very good stuff.”
[emphasis mine]
yes, saw the quotes, and really enjoyed Millar’s chain pulling. . .he’s a pro’s pro, and it’s clear he appreciates those who play the game right, and despises those who don’t.
well said Kevin. . .
Rick, you’re an optimist? I had no idea!
I would be shocked if everyone not named Jones, Markakis, or Guthrie doesn’t get put on waivers. I’d be equally shocked if anyone except Sherrill and Roberts didn’t make it through. I sort of like the team and it’s weird go-get’em attitude, and I’m intrigued to see if they can get back to .500, and get off the month long slump they were in (short answer: with this 3 man pitching staff? No.).
But I disagree and think the best thing about next year is we won’t have Jay Payton or Kevin Millar anymore. Those guys are just brutal with the bat.
I wouldnt say Millar is brutal with the bat. I mean I dont mind him hitting 7th. It’s a good spot for him. He never hit really for power. I think his best year he hit 23 HR’s. He could in a sense reach that this year. He’s only 6 or 7 away with 2 months left. If we lose Huff, then Millar cannot bat cleanup again. I understand that Millar isnt in the “plan” of rebuilding. out with the old, in with the new. but if we cant get a pitcher or 2 for him, then i wouldnt mind him here one more year.
Millar “brutal with the bat”???? Hey, he’s not going to hit .300, or drive in 110 rbi, or hit 30 dingers, but. . .he is going to hit over 20 HR this season, drive in 85 and likely end up hitting around .260, but. . .with an excellent OBP since he draws so many walks.
also, his defense is excellent, and again, his clubhouse influence and his on-field performance set great examples for the younger players. Millar knows how to play the game for team v. individual.
I do think Payton and possibly Hernandez will hit the waiver wire, and I can’t wait for Hernandez to leave. His defense is atrocious, and his hitting to sporadic.
I think Weiters should make it up here in September. I watched Ryan Zimmerman of the Nats make his debut and he fit right in. . .driving Vinnie Castillo to the bench ASAP.
Weiters appears to be a player with similar or better raw talents and abilities, and everything I read says his head is on right.
Looking at his batting line, I was hasty in proclaiming him brutal, but a guy who gives you a 102 OPS+ is not a starting first baseman on 90% of major league teams. Millar is 24th in OBP and 29th in SLG in baseball (although, granted that includes guys like Oscar Salazar beating him). We have to do better. We really do.
And there’s no way anybody trades for him, because nobody wants a guy like that, clubhouse presence or no. So I’m really hoping he’s not around next year. What would be the point?
Just so you know, an OBP of .360 defines a player that “does his job”.
Markakis is a fine example of a great player, hitting just below the stats .300/.400/.500. Millar is cruising at .240/.340/.420.
I like that I can nailed for saying something dumb. I really like it. Thanks guys.
My only real complaint with Millar is that he has basically two areas of expertise: taking walks and defense. Now he’s a first baseman, so his pop isn’t going to total up to much in comparison, and his defense is going to be minimal, because a first baseman’s defense just isn’t that important. So while I love that we have at least one guy who knows how to work a fuckin’ walk, I’d really like to see more power out of a first baseman who can’t run. I mean, he’s OPS+ing 102, so all those walks and his pop aren’t totaling up to that much in the end.
Last thing, and this kills me, but it’s spelled WIETERS. Sorry to be that guy.
