Game Two In the Bronx

Daniel CabreraAs is the case with all of his starts, the big question tonight is: which DC Cab will we get? The well-oiled, efficient Cadillac or the reckless, drunken dune buggy?

Despite the recent swoon the Orioles remain 23-12 in series opening games, including a 12-6 road mark. As I’ve mentioned before, winning that first game is huge, especially in a three-game series. You have to put yourself in position to absorb mistakes, and winning the first game of a series is a great way to do it.

Did I say mistakes? I might have meant Dennis Sarfate making his first major league start in Janqui Stadium. Yikes. I’m pulling for the guy but it would really be nice if the ‘Cab could come through tonight and turn tomorrow into a Gravy Game.

Don’t Forget! I’ll be on with the Fighting Ungers tonight from 6-8 on 1570 WNST AM, and online via the (finally working again) internet stream at wnst.net. Please tune in if you get a chance, and let me know what you think.

Thanks, all.

  • dude. i am predicting plunkings, ejections and possibly slap punches.

and more thunder from the b-more bats baby!

was at stadium last night … most fun i’ve had at a game in a looong time.

  • Totally not related, and not sure any of you care but there’s an article on Bmore being the “new olympic swimmer factory.”

    It’s here: http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/summer08/swimming/columns/story?id=3509195

That’s awesome, O. You don’t have a beard and an O’s cap, do you? They showed a dude on the TV and I thought to myself “I wonder if that’s Wayward O…” No joke.

By the way, all, tonight’s musical selections for the Ungers show include:

Elefant, Death Cab for Cutie, Joy Division, Drive Like Jehu, Sonic Youth, and Fugazi

    Go Birds…

  • Andrew out of Rochester

    Ugh..Sonic Youth…ugh..

  • dan the man

There’s like ZERO news on the trade front. Not that I really expect rumors to be a dime a dozen with Andy at the helm. But I just don’t know if there’s any good offers being made. I picture the deadline passing with nothing but maybe a last minute Chad Bradford dump just to sort do something and the majority of O’s Nation freaking the fuck out about how Andy was asking too much or how Angelos nixed a deal. But hey, if you dont get the goods, dont give up the goods. We shall see.

  • Greg

Teixeira to the Angels. Gonna be tough to sign him now I think.

  • Andrew out of Rochester

Why would Tex getting traded make us any less able to sign him?

  • Tomás

Millar is on FIRE. Kevin, keep that hair short, baby!

  • Andrew out of Rochester

I heard Kevbo on the pre-game “You know, I’m not a good baseball player…but there’s so many intangibles..” I didn’t the rest, I was laughing so hard. Good thing he told MASN and not the Yankees.

  • neal s

@ Teixeira/Greg’s point: the deal makes it harder for us to get him because there’s no way the Angels make this deal — and include Kotchman — if they don’t plan on making an effort to keep him in halos. With their deep pockets and recent winning history, they can probably make a hell of a case. I would have much rather seen Tex go to, say, Arizona.

The good news, though, is that the Angels are absolutely the favorites to win the Series now. Not that they weren’t already, but this is a big-time impact move.

    Meanwhile…

How about this hurt we’re putting on? I love the character of this team. Dave Trembley is Baseball Jesus.

  • neal s

Also, anybody noticed that as soon as Roch “officially” announced his move the blog went silent? I’m sure that’s just a coincidence…

  • neal s

What the hell? Cabrera tossed for hitting A-Rod?

Oh my god I fucking hate the Janquis.

  • neal s

This is about to get real, real ugly. That’s if it hasn’t already.

  • Against my better judgment, I kept watching after JJ gave up the two singles. I’m so glad I did.

And that ump can get stuffed. I thought Richie Garcia got fired years ago.

  • Wyatt in Jax

I love that picture of DC. I he smiling or saying ‘Foke you’? Or both?

  • neal s

Maybe the quieting down of trade rumors hasn’t been the best thing for ‘Ol Flatbrim. A-Rod up, nobody out, run in, runners on second and third. He just can’t make it easy.

  • Andrew out of Rochester

What a chUMP. That was absolutely shameful.

George Sherril making it interesting ….again.

But then he fucking Ks ARod!!!

We’re still in trouble with Giambi and Cano up, though. These guys are all tying runs or better. And Cano’s been red hot.

And that was incredibly unlucky, hitting Sherrill in the back and bouncing away from the fielders. Damn. 1 run lead left.

    How exciting….what happens next?

  • Tomás

If Hellboy gets the next out I am putting a fucking poster of him above my bed and writing Mrs. Sherrill all over my Trapper Keeper.

  • Tomás

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

  • neal s

    Wow.

And you guys wanted to trade him.

  • neal s

hahahahaha nice one Tomas. You better follow through on that, and with pictures.

    Or maybe not…

  • Andrew out of Rochester

This Two Pack stuff is dead on. I’m gonna die of cancer if my heart doesn’t give in first.

  • Andrew out of Rochester

It’s not every day you win a series (for the first time in how long?) in New York. And let Sarfate go for the sweep against Chamberlain tomorrow – uh, well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. It’s pretty fucking exciting.

    Gotta breathe. Breathe.

  • Tomás

Well at least SO4 has less pressure on him tomorrow.

Oh man…I cannot WAIT for the last game of the season especially if the Os are 1 game under .500 and the Spankees need to win to get the WC.

  • Tomás

no proof neal, you’ll just have to believe the rumors. lol

  • neal s

You know what’s weird? That last game at Janqui Stadium is actually just the last home game, not the last game of the season. The Janqs have to travel to Toronto and Boston after that.

Nevertheless, it’s going to be one hell of a moment. That’s the biggest game of the year for the O’s no matter what. It’d be the sweetest win in ten years.

  • Andrew out of Rochester

SO4….I’m trying to figure that one out, and now all I can think is

    Dennis S’forty

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Orioles out for blood tomorrow. You gotta believe Trembley (I really, honestly, truly, fully love this man. I would marry him, or at least allow my father to marry him) is gonna have them wanting the incredibly rare road sweep against the Yankees.

Should be fun – see you guys tomorrow at 1.

  • Tomás

AooR, sorry I should probably be asleep, thats the abbreviation for Sulfate.

  • neal s

Sulfate…that’s good. But if it was Dennis S’forty, we could inaugurate a tradition of cracking open bottles of OE every time he pitched. Which probably isn’t the best idea.

  • Tim T

Who knew that Aubrey Huff would have 22 HR, 71 RBIs before August. I gave up on him way too soon.

  • dan the man

    Amazing.

I love coming home late and reading all the comments – hilarious stuff.

Sulfate? Who thinks of that? I will gladly crack a 40 every time Sulfate pitches, but it’s going to be none other than cOlt 45. Yessir.

Credit where credit is due: the Yanks broadcasters immediately questioning that ump tossing Cabrera. They didn’t hesitate to criticize that. Wayward O was right, though.. ha!

Huff is swinging the bat with the power of Zeus right now – I dunno what happened in a year’s time, but good lord he’s on fire. He’s just killing anybody. Best closer in the game? NO PROBLEM.

    Get back to .500!! WTB!

  • rick

great game, or better stated, great outcome. . .the tossing of Cabrera was a joke, and we’re fortunate that it did not cost the O’s the game.

yup, the character and moxie of this ballclub is incredible. . .gotta love these guys.

I think Sarfate is up to the challenge today. Maybe six innings top, depending upon pitch count, but he’s got the right stuff IF he pitches with confidence and doesn’t try to get too perfect.

There’s a nice “get on a roll” in the air for the O’s!

  • Andrew out of Rochester

I’d be shocked – SHOCKED – if s’forty made it 5 innings. I’m also guessing that, since we had to use The Boat yesterday because the umpire was being stupid (an umpire making a bad call against us in Yankee Stadium? Well I never…), we’ll see Burres sooner or later after s’forty goes 3 or 4.

But I want to see them out for blood against Joba. Tough order, but Chamberlain has issues with pitch efficiency…so you never know.

  • dan the man

He had 9 k’s against the Sox, so this is a tall order for sure. 5 innings from DtM(Dennis the Mennis) would be a bonus. There’s nothing I want more than to really pound Joba. Like, really, really embarass him. But that’s hard when you throw 97 with movement.

  • random dude

Anybody notice Drew’s blog on WNST today? Not the 20 questions one, but the one about a rift between Trembley and media. Do you guys think there is anything to that or do you think he’s just trying to stir the pot? I mean there IS no reason for not letting Trembley know that (at the very least) we’ll pick up his ’09 option. In my opinion it’s a lot about nothing, just a stir the pot type blog, but if there are issues there, it would really undo almost all the good that happened this year, IMO.

  • neal s

I saw it, RD. I’m sure that what Drew says is true in terms of things other members of the media are saying, but I’m 90% sure that his speculation about a serious rift between Trembley and the front office is just that — speculation. Not saying 100% sure, but close enough.

It’s a stir-the-pot situation (though there’s nothing wrong with that).

  • neal s

Meanwhile, Peter Schmuck appears to have replaced Roch in the Sun‘s blogging corps.

  • dan the man

Drew being Drew. Is there a manager out there that doesn’t have a rift with the media? The media laughed outside his door after a crushing defeat. I’d have rifts with folks, too.

  • dan the man

As far as Schmuck goes, well, here’s his chance to embrace the “new media” he’s been known to dislike. Hypocritical? Maybe, but we’ll forgive him if he’s good. Just get us the inside news and we’ll get along just fine.

  • Andrew out of Rochester

At least Schmuck isn’t half as hypocritical as Chase Murray. You have to check out his blog’s about section, which states emphatically that “he hates blogs” and refers to his blog as an “online column”. FJM really went to town on him a few weeks back. Hysterical.

Actually, I don’t think its hypocritical so much as dragging your feet as much as possible before you finally join the party and discover that the blogosphere is a cool place. I think it’s, like a lot of problems, just a matter of not understanding your enemies as much as you should or could.

  • Tomás

Dan, in all fairness I got that from The Dugout, who gave Sarfate that moniker when he was traded from the ‘Stros.

I like S’Forty though and wouldn’t mind cracking open one to numb his first performance as long as we’re not doing Edward 40-hands, or as Wade Boggs calls them: Tuesdays.

  • dan the man

    hahahaha

  • rick

I can certainly understand the trepidation with Sarfate’s looming start this afternoon, but. . .just a gut feeling that he’s going to pull off a comparative stunner, e.g., 5 or 6 really strong innings whilst the Birds give Lord Chamberlin something to ponder as he hits the showers early.
