Going For the Sweep

cobra kai johnnyLast night was the kind of game that portends great possibility.

Like, for example, a sweep of the hated Pinque Sox, perhaps? It’s only a two-game series, sure, and only May, but a sweep’s a sweep.

To whom do we turn to help us scale this mountain? None other than the DC Cab himself — arguably our most impressive starter so far. Jon Lester stands in our way.

Great discussion last night, too. Let’s keep building.

Think this one’s posted up in the clubhouse somewhere?

“The guy is an idiot. I dropped my bat. It kind of freaked me out. I was upset they took him out of the game. He is good to hit. He’s 9-15. The guy sucks.” -Dustin Pedroia, Rookie of the Year (really?).

Actually, that’s probably not posted up anywhere because the idea is not to have Daniel throwing at anyone’s head again. But you can bet he remembers. Let’s hope he doesn’t forget that he’s the new and improved, calm and collected D-Cab. Stick with the plan, big guy, stick with the plan.

  2. Greg Says:

The best possible scenario is that Dustin Pedroia is 0-4 tonight with 4Ks and DCab pitches a complete game.

This just in: Dustin Pedroia is not a classy. I bet Derek Jeter wouldn’t run his mouth to the public like that degrading another team’s pitcher, regardless of what the pitcher did to him. Grow up Dustin.

  3. Andrew in Rochester Says:

Baserunning remains an issue. I don’t think Lester holds us down all day - but we had him on the ropes there and Huff let him off easy with that dumb mistake.

  4. Andrew in Rochester Says:

The pitching change music at the Yard is …Mario Brothers? Huh.

The Sox pen has been struggling, and we’re not (yet) a team that gives up late…can we do it?

Oh, and today shows exactly what I mean when I say that the O’s still look more unlucky than bad at the plate (though they seem to be getting hotter). That ball to ManRam totally should be a double with 2 RBI, but it gets caught. Bad fucking luck. That’s all it is, nothing that can be done about it either.

  5. dan the man Says:

    MAGIC!

    Did that just happen?

Jay Payton off of 0.50ERA Hideki Okajima?

    hahahahahaha

  6. dan the man Says:

That one’s for you Dustin Fucking Pedroia. Suck it.

  7. Andrew in Rochester Says:

    Orioles Magic Magic Magic!

    Orioles Magic Magic Magic!

    Orioles Magic Magic Magic!

They DID mention Okajima (who I share a birthday with, much to my chagrin) had let 8 of 11 inherited runners to score, but man oh man…that was excellent. Good hitting from Payton for sure.

I assume Sherrill won’t play today after the 5 out save yesterday.

  8. Andrew in Rochester Says:

Is it me, or do the Orioles look like they are just playing on an entirely different level than the Sox right now, in the 8th? They just look like they could do anything out there…it’s a pretty great feeling.

So is the DC Cab taking Payton’s curtain call. Hey Jay, no offense if it’s not your thing to curtain call, but com’on bro, we don’t hand’em out like candy. Indulge us, man.

  9. Andrew in Rochester Says:

Uh..I guess not. Just make it quick and painless and take tomorrow off, everybuddy.

  10. Andrew in Rochester Says:

Well that was fun…hey! My kitchen floor is so dirty, does anybody know any Sox fans I can ask for a broom?

I think you’ll all enjoy This thread.

  12. neal s Says:

That’s some good stuff, Ryan. What I love about it most is that nobody seems to be talking about how bad it is that the Orioles are the team doing the winning — it’s all inwardly focused on their own team’s shortcomings.

That’s not going to last all year, but for now…let them suffer.

  13. Greg Says:

Boston fans are ridiculous. Best team in baseball and… awww they go 4-6 on the road…. boo fucking hoo. Jesus Christ, spoiled rotten. They are most likely going to have back to back AL Rookie of the Years, at least two hitters destined to have 40+ home runs, and they all are moaning Lugo is a WEAKNESS at short stop. What I wouldn’t have done to have Lugo playing short for the first month of this season. They have a killer farm system, money to burn, 2 series titles in the past 5 years and a fanbase on par with the Brazilian national soccer team. What the hell else could you complain about?

  14. neal s Says:

What you leave out, Greg, is that they complain because they’re not that bright. They feel entitled to winning and can’t see the bigger picture when it doesn’t happen. It betrays a lack of cognitive ability.

To be fair, though, I don’t think the true Red Sox fans — the ones who followed the team and traveled to Camden Yards in the years before the Series victory — are like that. But they’re no longer the majority.

  15. Andrew in Rochester Says:

Eh, I can’t get too worked up over some stupid Red Sox fans who feel entitled, or some Yankees fans who feel entitled. I can’t fathom that sense of entitlement to victory in a sport.

But I do get a kick out of it. Like Hank Steinbrenner, or the sheer perfection of Red Sox fans acting just like their Yankee counterparts and neither willing to see that or acknowledge it.

Anyway, don’t get so worked up over it, Greg. Every team has dumbass fans. Red Sox have the Pink Hats, we have Drew.

    …oooooooooooooh snap!

  16. ryan Says:

Though I did not make it to today’s game, I did run 3 miles this evening, and my route took me through the Harbor.

It was particularly satisfying to see so many crestfallen Boston fans wandering around buying overpriced Philip’s asian green swimming crab meat cakes. I think I’m OK with them supporting our local economy as long as they lose.

  17. Greg Says:

    Interesting, Ryan.

I run from Little Italy to the Rusty Scupper and back pretty much nightly at around 6:30. I noticed a lot of sad sack Boston fans too. I will give them credit for being passionate about their team, that’s for sure.

  18. ryan Says:

Greg, I run from Calvert and Chase to the stairs at Fed Hill park, do dozen or so laps up the stairs then run back.

  19. Joe the Guy Says:

I only run to things (like a departing train) or away from things (like a barking dog)

I have a Finite Number of Heartbeats Theory…

    Oh yeah, BASEBALL!

Is 2/3 fair expectations for this weekend?

  20. Andrew in Rochester Says:

Well, let’s see. we have Olson, Burres and Guthrie going, and they have Hill, Perez, and Lannan…at OPACY. I’d say 2/3 is reasonable, since I have a lot of confidence in Olson and Guthrie versus the Nat’s “offense” and since dropping Burres from my fantasy team, I fully expect him to throw a no hitter or some such. It’s all in those guys performing to expectations and the bats heating up…
