Gentlemanly Means Pursued

Let’s Play Two?

They’re doing a doubleheader the old-fashioned (read: best) way down at Camden Yards tonight. Game one starts at 5:05 and there’ll be at least eighteen innings of baseball coming down the pike after that with no quarter given. I’d be stoked as hell if it was still May.

Alas, it’s September and I’m fairly certain that nobody — even the most die hard among us — has the stomach to actually sit down and watch two complete games in a row. Even if it’s against the playoff-bound Rays. But I’ll watch or listen to at least some of it, and hopefully they’ll manage a split.

It’s Garrett Olson vs. James Shields in game one. Then, in a sign of just how strange things have become, Alfredo Simon will start game two opposite Mitch Talbot.

For my part, I’ll be spending part of my evening rubbing elbows with local luminaries at the Havana Club after-party for that charity golf tournament I mentioned last week. Unfortunately, I’ll be there as a member of the “press” which means I’m not allowed to enjoy myself. If I see anything interesting I’ll be sure to let you know.

You’re stretching the limits there, “John” — this is only staying up because it’s for charity. Email me directly next time you want to advertise something.

Here’s the basic wrapup of that party: I lied about not being able to enjoy myself (which was kinda tongue in cheek anyway, if that didn’t come through), but there’s nothing to report. Or, great times but no news.

Meanwhile…I’m glad the football talk is picking up around here. I absolutely love seeing that. It helps salve the wounds of this season winding down, which continues to be a rather painful experience. Tonight being no exception.

One positive to take from all this – Garrett Olson is “very happy” with his season. Delusional, but good to know, and it makes everything a lot better.

This team is a joke, year after year. Depressing isn’t even the word. I had a mini-meltdown last night with a lot of cursing involved. Why do I even bother? What is this run, 5-26? The only reason we won’t go 5-34 or whatever that run was is that the games will mercifully end.

Fuck this team right now. They take all baseball joy from you. Bleed it out slowly and painfully. There’s optimism for the future, yes, but the end of next year BETTER not be like this. It’s torture.

My bad – this run is 6-27.
