dan the man: @neal s - I love that place! A true gem. BYOB is a great touch, also.

neal s: Duckpin rock-and-bowl at Stoneleigh lanes on York Road. That's good stuff.

Orioles-Tigers Open Thread

orioles angry birdNot that I think you need a reminder, but just in case: Dave Trembley is the man. Apparently he went off on some reporters today who were cracking jokes outside his office and, in his mind, not taking the game seriously enough. From what I’ve gathered it was a very heartfelt speech, the kind of thing that can leave no doubt about just how badly this guy wants to get us back to Winning Team Baseball. If anyone has the audio or a link thereto, please post it in the comments.

Meanwhile, it’s Jeremy “Quality Start” Guthrie against Armando Gallaraga tonight in another one of those “must win” type games.

Thursday, August 7th is Adam Loewen bobblehead night down at Bowie. How does everybody feel about that game for a meetup?

I just heard parts of that Trembley rant on the Ungers show and it was great. Hopefully some audio will surface eventually because I can’t do it justice with a description.

  • Yee-uh.

We needed it, we got it. A bit more tomorrow and Sunday, please.

  • Tomás

I can’t find the audio, but I found the text from Roch’s blog.

Awesome stuff. The video is beastly though as Trembley looks *PISSED*, but still acts like an adult unlike Ozzie Guillen.

Luuuke with 2 Homers, Mora & Huff with one each, and great plays all around the diamond to give Guts the W.

Dave Trembley is a gift from the baseball Gods to the city of Baltimore. Just read Roch’s post with the text of his “rant”, if you could call it that. It was more of a mission statement. He is so focused on turning the culture of this team around, and it’s infectious. And he’s not just bitching at people because, like the man said, he still answers every question that’s thrown at him. And he’s all respect. What more can you ask of a manager?

Good win tonight. Guthrie. He’s not a pitcher, he’s a baseball player. How about that play where he threw to third to get the out on the ground ball? I have no doubt the guy could play an infield position. We already know he has legit speed, too. Gangster.

Melvin Mora is exactly the kind of guy that makes boneheaded mental mistakes, but does awesome things like bounce a ball off of the foul poul. WTF.

Way to add to the discussion, “Jessica K.” Feel free to piss off chime in anytime.

What a great game though…more thoughts tomorrow.

  • Mike L

I think the only time I’ve seen DT leave a press conference early was after DCabs complete game, he answered a question or 2, then said “Why dont guys go talk to daniel. hes certainly earned it.” So he gives credit where credit is due as well. Trembley is the man!

  • ryan97ou

wow. what a sermon indeed. trembley is THE MAN.

good to see luke getting back into it.

  • neal s

maybe I was too hard on “Jessica K”…

    But really, what a win.

  • Tomás

Neal, or … maybe you weren’t.

  • Mike L

god dammit DCab, seriously. Saturday is one of my only nights off where I can relax at home and watch a game. Last week we give up 10 in 3 innings. now it’s 6-0 in the 1st, and brian rungee is the worst umpire ever. That same asshole that got suspended for a game with that altercation against the mets, where he taunted beltran into getting tossed. Now an inside pitch to Sheffield which “clearly” doesnt hit him, Rungee doesnt make the call, but Sheff trots to 1st anyway, and Rungee lets him go.

6-2 now, Mora hit another bomb, at-a-boy melmo

  • Mike L

scratch that, 7-2. they better check the baseballs. Faheys bobbled 2, Cabrera dropped one trying to throw to first, and mora let one bounce over his glove. WTB looks like WTF tonight.

  • Mike L

i can think of 9 guys DCab owes a steak dinner to for bailing his ass out, for now. 8-7 O’s. 2 roberts doubles, and a ton of singles = 6 run inning.

  • Tomás

between that inning to put the Os up and the Loewen news, this night is turning out pretty weird.

  • neal s

Rotten spammers — “Jessica K” is no more.

Meanwhile, what the hell is happening in this game? The DC Cab is all over the road.

I’m also now officially a huge Adam Loewen fan.

  • Mike L

could adam loewen be the second coming of rick ankiel? i honestly dont know much about him as hitter, but the guys are talking him up like hes a better hitter than pitcher

  • Mike L

well, sarfate owes cabrera that steak dinner now, 10-9 tigers. can you say momentum.

i guess we shouldnt expect much from juan casto, our new SS. he’s 36 years old, has played only 100 or so major league games since ‘06, and doesnt hit for power. Trembley said “i havent seen him play since texas leauge ballin 1993. so I dont know what his role will be.” We gave up Mike McCoy for him (???) cant really understand the reason for the trade. other than Bynum sucks ass, and we needed someone, and they felt Moore, or Luis wasnt ready yet.

  • Mike L

here we go… Oriole Magic? I wanna hear that foghorn!!

  • Mike L

hell yeah ramon. first pitch bomb. MAGIC!!! Tie game.

  • neal s

I’m digging this running commentary, Mike. I’m kind of dropping in and out of the game and it’s cool to get these checkpoints.

    Now…time to put it away.

  • Tomás

    BAZOOKA JONES!!!

  • neal s

    Oh my — Adam Jones!

  • Tomás

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

  • neal s

    OH HELL YES.

Man do I wish I could have watched this whole game.

    LUUUUUUUUKKKKKKKEEEEEE!

  • Mike L

    LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUKE

    Cue the music! ORIOLES MAGIC!

  • Mike L

what an awkward game though. spot em 6 runs, timely errors on both sides, a few missed calls, and wait to hear what DT has to say. 11-10. ride this high into sunday boys.

  • neal s

I’ll be at the game tomorrow, manning my section 17 perch. I’d love to say “hey” to anybody who’s heading down there. Just lemme know.

  • Mike L

DT just said were going to win tomorrow. with a serious face. If we do, he is jesus in a Oriole uniform

  • Tomás

Mike, that DT quote was awesome.

Reporter: “Do you think the celebration was a little excessive tonight?”

DT: “No, I’d do that every damn - uh darn - time we won.” pauses, to reporter again “You better wear your orange tomorrow because we’re gonna win.”

So damn serious, so damn awesome, so damn TREMBLEY!

  • Tomás

Also apparently the FO has relaxed the facial hair rule enough with Hellboy to let him grow a Van Dyke, ought to fill in nicely.

  • neal s

Trembley really is one of the best things to happen to Orioles baseball for a decade or more. Everything — everything — starts with attitude and approach, and Trembley knows this. He knows that changing a culture takes work and that most of that work involves the kind of details that most people don’t pay any attention to. Combine that with the fact that he clearly lives and dies Black and Orange and you’ve got one hell of a force.

Man oh man…every time they look like they’ll go gently into that good night, somebody steps up.
