O’s face really tough pitching in Toronto. You kind of knew this game was over before it started. It’s 3-0 Jays, with no one able to string enough hits or even productive outs together to score a damn run. Nick is the only guy that can hit Marcum with any regularity. And Brian Burres went 4.1 or so and looked bad. Why had he been so effective before? Why is Marcum so effective?
WHHYYYYYYY
And guys are running all over Ramon Hernandez. WHY is he so suddenly terrible at baseball?
Oh my God, and I just saw a replay – the Jays are beating us wearing the absolute FRUITIEST powder blue unis.
Shame. Utter shame right now.
Lineout, flyout, groundout.
In other news:
Rangers DFA Ponson
The Dallas Morning News is reporting that the Rangers have designated Sidney Ponson for assignment for “disrespectful and adverse reactions to situations unbecoming of teammates.”
Ponson, a non-roster invitee in spring training, was having a solid season for the Rangers with a 4-1 record in 9 starts and a 3.88 ERA. The Rangers have 10 days to trade Ponson.
That’s awesome, Dan. I love a good Sir Ponson story.
Also, we’re totally getting swept this weekend. Maybe we sneak away with 1, and maybe we can grab 1 from Boston, but we’re gonna get killed in the next 6 games. There’s no avoiding it.
But I’m gonna bet we see Albers instead of Burres next time this spot comes up.
Roberts is a freaking doubles machine. Did you know no other player since ’05 has hit more doubles than Brian Roberts?
A run!
Nick is in one of his patented “I can hit anybody” zones. Love it. His average is up to .282.
Mora home run!! 4-3!
Tallet’s ERA just went from 1.88 to 2.63. Boo-yah.
But then a 3-0 count on Huff and he grounds out on ball 4?
WHHHYYYY
At least take strike 1, man… jesus
Millar home run! How about Mora and Millar these days!
4-4… wow.
Good old Armando Benitez.
ADAM JONES HOMER! 2-RUN SHOT! 3 HOME RUNS IN THE INNING!
So much for the comeback…
Like I said, they might be able to steal one…
Hmm…guess I was wrong.
I can’t help but feel the impending doom of the bullpen falling apart. Aside from Guthrie and Cabrera, none of our starters are getting deep into the game on a regular basis. Can we really rely on Sarfate, Cormier, and Bierd (when he comes back) to bridge the gap? Bradford and Walker will have more good outings than bad ones. Johnson and Albers have been amazing, but we have to figure that one of the two is heading to the rotation at some point this season….
I’m very pessimistic…
Dude that was an amazing comeback
Yeah, I was ready to vomit in the bottom of the 8th, but what a game.
…I cannot believe I went out with a girl instead of watching this game. That’ll teach me.
AJ and Nick are HOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!
I don’t care if we’re “running on fumes” because not everyone is heating up at the same time, but this is after all the Lost Season. Bring it on.
So Kona is upset he went on a date with a girl, and then immediately remarks on the hotness of Nick the Stick and Adam the ……. Stick. Huh.
Really great win tonight. We need the momentum against these pitchers in the next 5 games pretty badly.
ya know, I thought about the implications of writing it like that, obviously talking about their HITTING, but I’m afraid I just blue myself.
@ xi0: I hear you about the bullpen, and the starting pitching is a little bit worrisome at this point, but you have to then like that tonight, DT utilized the guys in the bullpen that aren’t yet overworked. Cormier did a nice job only allowing 1 run in 2.1 IP, and he hasn’t pitched in at least 4 or 5 games. Then in the 8th, I thought for sure DT would go to the Johnson, but I’m glad he decided to give the kid a much-needed break. Bradford was his usual spotty self, but got the job done nonetheless and gave JJ a nice day off.
I was listening to the game and it really seemed as though the O’s wouldn’t get anything going at all. I mean, they were just getting pitched to. Stranded runners, 1-2-3 innings, double plays, the whole 9 yards. And then Roberts kicks it all off with an innocent double off of Marcum, the bullpen comes in, and the shit hits the fan for the Jays. If I’m a Jays fan, I’m furious that my ‘pen gave up three home runs to 1) an aging veteran who’s on the decline, 2) a goofy, aging veteran hitting like .250, and 3) a kid who really can only hit home runs if the pitch is terrible at this point in his career, which it was. But I’m not a Jays fan, am I?
Armando Benitez in the bullpen? You couldn’t find someone else?
Just another surprising comeback win. Where do these random power surges come from? Millar has a team-leading 11 home runs. I did call that he would have the best year of his career this year. So far so good.
That Millar shot was a bomb. 3rd row!
Er… I meant upper deck, 3rd tier.
Millar didn’t hit his 10th home run last year until July 27th and didn’t have 30 RBI until July 4th. By his standards, he’s killing it this year.
Oh Kona, you blow hard!
Millar is indeed having a good year by his standards. By major league first baseman standards, I sure hope he’s not back next year, but I digress. Actually, I’d really like to see Millar be our guy on the bench, backing up DH and 1B, but I know he hates that people want to see that from him (seriously, though, no other team in the majors would use him as a starter at this point…maybe the Mets, Marlins, or Mariners, but com’on).
.500 again feels nice. It’s June 7th, and we’re at .500. Viva la Lost Season.
I think Millar is definitely a good baseball guy, and would be a really great complementary piece to a contending baseball team, but I still enjoy seeing him play. Sure he’s slower than Gibson in ’88, but what are the alternatives? Huff? Sure he’s a natural 1B, but he appears to be at the very best, passable at 3B, and he’s still a proven hitter (albeit very streaky). Unlike some young minor leaguer or utility player that would replace the “Sure-to-be-injured-at-some-point” Melvin Mora (I guess I’m not giving Scott Moore much of a chance I guess). Then who DH’s? We don’t have a solid pure hitter on the team who isn’t an asset in the field. The obvious transition is for older catchers to move to 1B (more in the NL obviously) and DH…but Ramon isn’t much of a hitter these days. He could rebound this year, but is a true asset as a hitter? Honestly, no.
Millar being moved at the deadline would probably mean that MacPhail and Angelos are making a legitimate push to get Mark Teixeira in ’09. They’d have to pay out of the ass, but it’s a glaring need with no can’t-miss prospects in the farm system (AFAIK, Smoak could have been). This move would go against what MacPhail wants to do probably, but Angelos is sitting on a lot of MASN revenue supposedly, and it probably wouldn’t hurt us in the long run to bring in a Home-Town boy. Teixeira would be 29 at the start of the ’09 season.
I guess I’m kind of off-topic here aren’t I?
It is worth noting that our payroll is very modest right now, and went down with Tejada’s trade. Of course, Wieters and Arrieta both got a lot of money last year, and there’s been a lot of talk about Asian scouting, a new center in the Dominican, new improvements to Spring Training – all that stuff costs quite a bit, too…still, the Orioles used to be the top payroll team and we’re really very modest now, so I never assumed that Tex would be out of our price range. The question is whether or not signing him to a long, untradeable deal is a sound decision based on the club’s current performance.
Which is actually hard to say at this point, but Tex’s stats are showing some wear and tear….
That game is what’s awesome about our team. Call me an optimist — and any of you who happen to actually know me, know that this is a fuck of a statement…
amazing. can’t wait for hagy tee shirt night.
Meet me up in the Left?
awesome.
Raise your hand if you thought Melvin Mora was on the decline!
I’m planning on going to Hagy night, despite a lack of anyone to go with, so I’ll be up in left…where’s my cowboy hat?
Yeah I saw that promo on MASN last week and practically wet myself, I am there with bells on. And Carl Weathers too.
Baby you got yourself a stew going on.
I think that that’s probably the best promotion they’ve done in a looong time. Literally everyone I know wants to go. It should be crazy.
I’m there, when is that shit?
TLC…. UNITE!
I just thought about the stupidity of saying everyone I know is going and yet I have noone to go with. Weird. It’s the first game of the Astros series, isn’t it?
I wonder if Trachsel is even physically capable of striking someone out…
dan, the 17th at 7:05, its a tuesday.
GO BIG BROWN GO BIG BROWN GO
so i just get back from florida, not getting to see an O’s game for a week, but from the highlights i would think that Millar has 30 HR’s by now. He’s killing the ball. AJ with 2 more homers, and a 14 hit performance by our boys today. Keep on rollin. Hopefully with the suspensions to key Rays and pink sox players we can gain a few games here quick. I love seeing the yankees in the basement. Highest payroll + last in the division = Fuck you yankees.
Its good to be back in charm city too. I was in Ft.Myers where i lived for 4 years, and is also the spring trainging home of the red sux. Also the Minnesota twins, but you’d never know it in any of the boston clad bars. ( seeing as how i couldnt get a twins-o’s game on anywhere) I wore my O’s hat proudly though.
Hey guys, Kevin from NumerOlogy and Orioles Card O the Day here. I will be there on Hagy t shirt night as well. It would be great to see the Yard packed on a Tuesday night for the love of Wild Bill, wouldn’t it?
Damnit, I have to work that night. Hmmm… I might have to finagle something. I mean, a whole stadium packed with Wild Bill shirts? There’ll be so many O-R-I-O-L-E-S chants! How could I miss that?
MacPhail gets it. The creation of the Hagy fan award. The reinstatement of “Baltimore” (hopefully) to the jerseys. There’s a free cap night with the old school bird-with-bat logo on it. Honoring the ’83 team and the ’79 team. Why was it so difficult for the organization to understand that it’s not a bad thing to embrace the Orioles’ storied past? This is exciting times indeed.
Oh yeah, and awesome win today. I was with Andrew in thinking, before this series started, that the O’s had a pretty good chance to get swept. Will we ever learn to trust in this team? Maybe it’s more fun to be surprised every time.
Guthrie gets a well-deserved laugher. Markakis is unstoppable right now. Payton had himself a big night. Even Quiroz got in on the fun. Roberts can’t stop hitting doubles.
And then DT makes a smart move to bring in Trachsel. If it works out, you save everyone in the bullpen, who have pitched a lot recently. It didn’t quite work out, though, and the end of the game dragged on into a bit of a mess, but there was no hope for the Jays. Really, though, this has to be Trachsel’s last or at the very most, 2nd to last appearance. He’s gone when a 4th bench player is added during the interleague stretch. It was either he or Cormier, and Cormier is doing much better. The game just goes to shit with Trachsel in there. The defense zones out, he’s always pitching behind – he’s done.
The Keys scored 19 runs today, with Brandon Snyder having a real big night. He’s the one guy in the organization, besides maybe Rowell, that could be considered a first base prospect. He still has a lot to prove in higher level ball, but he’s been on a good run.
The only way Trax pitches again (ever) is if Boston starts demolishing us. He won’t be used tomorrow, and after Boston he’s the first guy to get cut. Too bad, he seemed like a nice dude. But fuck’em.
You can’t give up 4 runs in a short relief appearance up 8 runs on your side of the board and expect to keep your spot. Agreed, nice dude but bring up a young kid and see what we can develop.
