Gentlemanly Means Pursued

Pink Invasion Open Thread/Radio Alert

sexy pink lingerieThe O’s are back home — finally — for a two-game series against the hated Pinque Sox. And we all know what that means. The good news, though, is that I think a handful of Sox fans actually work for a living, so these weeknight games might be relatively tame. We shall see.

We’ve got Jeremy Guthrie on the hill tonight against Josh Beckett, which should be fun. Surprisingly enough, too, Orioles hitters are batting a collective .291 against Beckett. Something tells me we won’t touch him up quite that badly tonight, but one never knows.

Also, don’t forget that tonight I’ll be a guest on the Fighting Ungers radio show on 1570 WNST from 6:30-8.

Starting tonight, this is a regular gig every other Tuesday. So, tune the hell in! And why not call while you’re at it?

I have a 7-7:30PM window in which I shall listen. Make it a point to say interesting things during those thirty minutes.

Two similar pitchers tonight, except Beckett has a little better stuff and a little better location. Obviously. He could have won the Cy Young last season.

The Sox are batting like fucking .700 as a team. Seriously, as much as we all hate Sox fans, you have to be in awe of the team they’ve created. Let’s count the successful farm-raised players on their team shall we?

    1. Pedroia
    2. Papelbon
    3. Lowrie
    4. Ellsbury
    5. Youkalis (I think..)
    6. Buccholtz
    7. Lester
    8. Numerous Decent Outfielders in the Minors

It seems like whenever they have a problem with a position, they call some dude up and Lo! The guy does amazingly well at the major league level. They mix home-grown talent with blockbuster free agents (Ramirez, Ortiz, Lowell, Drew, Dice-K, Beckett, etc.) and it’s a plan the O’s should follow.

That said, let’s fuck em up.

Far be it for me to make wild accusations, but here’s the facts:

    1) Kevin Millar is a Red Sox cheerleader

    2) Kevin Millar made a stupid, stupid error in the first that directly led to a Red Sox run.

    3) Kevin Millar also popped up immediately, giving the Red Sox an extra, easy out.

  • Andrew in Rochester

Jim Palmer thinks the Red Sox fans are booing, but we know the truth: the O’s fans are Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuking.

Vicki, where are you? I want to have a back and forth with your stupid Red Sox fandom!

  • dan the man

    4) Kevin Millar got a clutch-as-fuck RBI single to extend the inning, which led to Luke’s 3-run shot.

    5) Kevin Millar is normally a very good defensive first basemen and thus gets a pass.

    6) Aubrey Huff, though, has no business playing 3rd base ever again. In his life.

  • dan the man

    7) Jim Palmer is senile.

  • Andrew in Rochester

SIgh. Why leave a 107 pitch Guthrie in there, especially when Casey gets on for Pedroia…knowing that after Pedroia is the Trouble?

    Sigh…

  • dan the man

This could be bad… Guthrie gives up two singles and it’s up to Walker to get 3 outs with 2 guys on base? I just don’t see it going down like that. Oh yeah.. vs. Ortiz and Manny… man o man, cross your fingers.

  • Andrew in Rochester

And I happen to like the Thorne/Palmer combo…it’s certainly above average, having listened to a majority of announcers around the league. The Hunter/Martinez team is the bad one. Thorne/Palmer is a solid broadcast team.

  • neal s

I don’t like feeling this way, but Jamie Walker’s entry is making me nervous.

How about Jeremy “Quality Start” Guthrie? Yeomanlike.

  • dan the man

Oh, I agree. I love Jim Palmer, he’s unintentionally hilarious. Hunter is terrible. But I love Buck Martinez as well. Still, I think Joe Angel kills all of them.

  • dan the man

    Jamiejamiejamiejamiejamie… come on, man.

  • neal s

    Oh, man…

  • dan the man

    Grand slam for Manny’s 499th? I really don’t want to call it…

    But I’m calling it.

  • Andrew in Rochester

We need one of them unassisted dealies.

If we lose, I’m pissed at Trembley. What was he fucking thinking? Geez-us.

  • dan the man

    No pressure, Jim.

  • Andrew in Rochester

Ha! My dad’s comment on the situation: “We’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

  • dan the man

These umps fucking LOVE the Red Sox, don’t they?

  • neal s

    your dad = brilliant

  • dan the man

Im a nervous wreck right now

  • neal s

Hell yes double play! Oh man oh man oh man, that is the shit right there.

  • dan the man

    !!!!!!!!!!!!! jimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmyjimmy

  • Andrew in Rochester

I will say this – I’ve been as impressed with Johnson as I’ve been with anyone. He’s really battling out there, pounding the strikezone and not giving in to ManRam – and that’s all I can ask in this horrible situation.

The double play is just whipped cream on top.

  • dan the man

Best possible scenario besides a triple play.

  • dan the man

Except, I guess, 3 pickoffs. ha

  • Andrew in Rochester

Holy shit Jim fucking Johnson fucking.

I’m calling him Jim “The Boat” Johnson now.

  • dan the man

cannot freaking believe they got out of that. i love the game of baseball

  • dan the man

Just saw video of Nick’s sweet ass catch earlier in the game. He’s got an 0-fer, but at least he flashed the glove on t-shirt night.

  • dan the man

I worry that Johnson is being used way too much, though. He’s this year’s ’07 Jamie Walker.

  • neal s

If I’m not mistaken, though, wasn’t Johnson a starter in the minors? He should be able to handle an increased workload.

  • dan the man

    maaaan

  • dan the man

Yeah he was, I’m just sayin.

    Sherrill time. Eesh.

  • neal s

Oh, man…5-4 now with first/second, one out. Sherrill coming in to get five outs for the save.

You all know I don’t want to say this, but…shades of ’07?

  • dan the man

Walker should have never come into this game. Where is Chad Bradford?

    Baseball stresses me out.

  • Andrew in Rochester

Gotta stop getting into these stupid jams. No Bradford or Albestonight? This seems like a patented groundball DP time.

  • dan the man

George’s control has been suspect recently.

  • dan the man

    mkay, mkay….

  • Andrew in Rochester

I think that Johnson’s IP wouldn’t be an issue if at least one of the following were true:

    1) Walker pitches effectively in ’08
    2) Randor Bierd isn’t hurt
    3) Sarfate has better control
    4) Lance Cormier is on the Tides roster
    5) McCrory had pitched better for the O’s

  • dan the man

    Alriiiiight

  • dan the man

Yeah that’s the damn truth, Andrew. Bierd is sorely missed and if Sarfate could locate, he would be scary coming out of the bullpen.

  • neal s

I think Walker came in because DT is the kind of guy who will trust his veteran no matter what. Jamie Walker is good at what he does and he deserves every chance to shake the slump. I say keep putting him in there until you just can’t possibly justify it anymore.

Sherrill gets the job done…time for an insurance run or three.

  • Andrew in Rochester

I agree, and I generally don’t have problems with Trembley’s bullpen management…but he’s got to go with the hot hand, you know…and the bullpen’s got issues – I don’t trust anyone as much as The Boat myself. I expect when Walker gets hot again Johnson’s IP will even out some, and when Bierd comes back, and so on.

  • KonaBoy

I was so betting on Luuuuke coming out of his slump against the Sawks, and Johnson>Papelbon.

  • dan the man

I was so happy when Manfra called that Luke home run. Fist-pumping on 695 with people looking at me like I was nuts. Good for Luke. Not to mention he’s got 3 hits tonight, I think.

  • neal s

Yeah, we definitely need to take note of Luuuuuke’s HR tonight. If he can get hot it would be huge.

Johnson>Papelbon? Hmmm…maybe, for now at least. The kid has been magic.

  • neal s

By the way, did anybody tune in tonight? Not a whole lot of baseball talk but that’s mostly because the O.J. Mayo and Spygate stories are kind of dominating the headlines. I had fun regardless, and this regular radio gig with the Ungers is something I’m really happy to have. I’m hoping all of you will share in it with me, because it’s got a lot more to do with The Loss Column than it does with me.

And now, back to the George Sherrill show…

  • Andrew in Rochester

I had a listen until the game started. Your voice is much different than i expected. Maybe its because everyone is nasally in my head when I read them.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeere we go: Ortiz, ManRam, Lowell

  • dan the man

I did tune in, nice job man. I was thinking it must be really hard to figure out when you can talk with those two cats constantly jiving at each other. Just when you think they’re about to head one direction, they pull a 180 and go somewhere else. You sound like a natural on there tho when you got a chance to speak haha

  • Andrew in Rochester

I’m thinking the ump might actually hate the Orioles. This is getting ridiculous.

  • dan the man

    See ya later David.

  • dan the man

hahahha this is amazing i can’t wait to watch this later
