Um, aren’t we playing a 4 game set?

Found a sweet page that is about the 1897 Temple Cup (World Series started in 1903) between the Baltimore Orioles of the National League vs. the Boston Beaneaters of the American League.

Apparently there’s supposed to be a book about it, and this is a teaser to publishers (?), either way it sounds awesome. Check out the sweet pictures (friggin’ wood carvings?!) and that apparently the Os were hated everywhere outside of Bawlmer.

PS. I’m liking the old italicized “B” to be the alternate cap; that in orange on all black would be intimidating.

In the team store on Eutaw Street I saw an olde English looking B hat that was black and orange that looked GREAT, but I can’t for the life of me figure out what it is, and they didn’t have my size anyway…I thought it said 1955 Baltimore (it was definitely Baltimore and a Cooperstown hat) but it might’ve been from the older teams (Terps, original O’s, maybe?).

It was a very handsome and elegant cap…can anyone help me out here?

Apparently “Game of Brawl” is already published, cool deal.

AooR, I think that’s the NL Orioles with that stylized B, was it like this one on the shirts?

Yeah, Andrew, we are. I knew that but just kind of stumbled over the wording. I was in a hurry, it happens. Mea culpa.

I was at the Olson/Lester game on Saturday. 80-20 Sox fans, without question. Complete and utter dominance of Camden Yards by Boston fans. Yes, the O’s fans were doing what they could, but I have never, EVER heard Camden Yards so loud as when Manny hit #500. The bleachers were shaking. He hit the ball, flash bulbs, two seconds of dead silence, and then the place exploded. It was actually kind of cool, in a depressing sort of way. But my friends and I talked shit incessantly the entire game, and no Sox fans ever really fired back, so…make of that what you will.

Look… right now, the Orioles are at the exact point of the season as last year when the ship starting sinking. We might be there again. No one is hitting over .270. Jacoby Ellsbury is making Brian Roberts look like a shameful leadoff man. Brian Burres has returned to his old, meatball-throwing, 30-3 self. No magical comeback wins for this series – our boys just aren’t as good as the other team.

Doesn’t mean they will sink to rock bottom ‘07-style. The bullpen is still better, and the starting pitching, with Trachsel out of the rotation, is sort of ok. But damn, this whole Sox series just stinks of ‘07. From the return of the Pink Hats to the mediocre play on the field to Brian Burres to serving up #500. We got some work to do to prove otherwise.

What can we say about the jersey thing except that Angelos clearly has someone he truly trusts in Andy MacPhail. Maybe that’s all it took? MacPhail is getting it done, one step at a time, and it’s saving Angelos a lot of face. Here’s hoping they get it right.

    i was at the last 3 games…

absolutely without question 97-3 red sox fans…

    lol

So what all you guys are saying is that in a year Bahstin fans will be out on the streets holding signs saying “will act like a$$hole for food” because they spent their stimulus checks on invading the Yard?

  • neal s

The truth is that Boston fans will continue to represent a majority at Camden for at least the next 3-4 years. Yankees fans maybe less so, depending on whether that team enters a period of prolonged mediocrity. I don’t see the Pink Sox getting bad anytime soon, so even if O’s fans start coming back it’ll still take time for the tide to shift.

One thing I disagree with, though, is what Andrew said in an earlier thread: that there’s nothing we can do about it. It’s true that we can’t go to all of the season ticket holders who sell their seats and convince them of the error of their ways, but we can still do our part as O’s fans by going to the games and supporting the team. That doesn’t solve the problem, but it certainly helps.

It’ll become a lot easier, too, if the team keeps playing hard and making smart decisions. I’d honestly take a 50-50 split at this point, and that’s not an unrealistic goal.

That wasn’t the B…I have an inkling it might be the away hat for the 1915 Terps….guess I’ll find out next time I’m on Eutaw Street (which will either be tomorrow if I can find someone to go to the game with, or for the Pirate games).

I’m not stressing getting dominated in every category by the Sox. They’re the cream of the AL, and they’re finally playing like it. We’re not supposed to beat them with Millar and Mora and Hernandez playing against Ellsbury (who is just a fantastic baseball player, he really is) and Lowell and Ramirez. The talent just ain’t there, hon.

What I will stress is how we rebound tomorrow with the pitching in our favor and against Minnesota. What’s important, and what’s been important, is not letting the losing get us carried away into the summer swoons of yesteryear (and before). Stay tuned!

Neal, what I mean is as a group we can make some change, but individually, I basically have to accept Yankee and Red Sox fans (anybody else think it’s some of the same people who just switched sides like 3 years ago?) overriding us in the present. The team needs to play well consistently before the people get interested. That’s all.

After we lost friday night’s game i turned to my friend and said “that could be the back breaker that send us into a downward spiral”…and seeing how the team has reacted since then, i hate to say that’s looking more and more correct.

I know there are a lot of games left, but throughout the season we have thus far been pretty good at damage control. This doesn’t look to be happening anymore and i even see Trembley making some bad decisions (taking olson out too early, and leaving burres in too long).

I hope I’m wrong, but I can see this really being hard to come back from. I can only hope that a win tonight would stop the bleeding slightly.

  • Joe the Guy

    Sweet Jinx Post Neal!

Don’t worry, I can feel the “W” tonight.

We’re firing up the Quality Start Machine…

Tim Wakefield is The Last Great Knuckleballer and someday young baseball fans will ask us about him…

  • Taylor

I went on Friday and I have to say that Boston fans are without a doubt the most annoying people of all time. The guy behind me would not shut up about how terrible Baltimore and their fans were. He was from L.A. which is a typical Boston fan really. Bandwagon jumpers. A win might have shut him up but the Birds blew it…

  • neal s

Thanks for chiming in, Taylor. Always cool to see new names popping up in the comments. Stick around, have a beer.

  • Taylor

Thanks Neal, heard you on WNST and decided to check out the site. I love it!

  • Wyatt in Jacksonville

I flew up from Florida for the weekend and also had to endure hearing Boston fans talk about how ‘embarrassing’ Baltimore fan support was…thoroughly irritating.

  • neal s

    Much appreciated, Taylor.

Likewise nice to hear from you, Wyatt. Hope you guys stick around.
