Ravens Steelers MNF Open Thread

I can’t remember the last time there was a football game that felt this big ’round these parts. And why not? Barring a dramatic reversal of fortunes (or a nasty run of injuries), the division will come down to these two teams. Getting a game in hand this early will go a long way.

The town is stoked, the players are jacked, and it’s all going to play out before a national TV audience. This is good stuff.

Justin will be by with his wrapup tomorrow when the dust has settled one way or the other. In the meantime, here’s an all-purpose comment thread to help get you through the night.

Enjoy it.

17-10 Ravens… more heart than head talking. but the anti spam word was “harbaugh” It’s a sign.

It feels like something just switched on for the Ravens there and they just suddenly figured out how to play offense against the Steelers. But, boy, Flacco’s just barely got out of 2 interceptions there. Heckuva first quarter so far. 3-3

Oh yes, now it’s really turning into something. I’m disappointed that Flacco didn’t get that TD on the long second quarter drive, but when the offense is holding the ball for minutes and then the defense forces the Steelers to go 3 and out all quarter long in Pittsburgh, we’ve really got something going here. Oh yes. Very exciting.

Hell yes! What a half, on national TV! I’m heading out to a bar (The wonderfully named Tipsy McStaggers) to watch the second half, but boy am I a happy camper with the first half. And by the way, I really think that the running back depth we’ve got between McLane and Rice is going to really make the offense work – but I say that without knowing a damn thing about football.

    Talk to you all tomorrow.

And just like that, it’s last year all over again.

Jared Johnson lost us this game. I’m glad Harbaugh was right in his face after that.

funny thing is i came away from that game convinced that the ravens might be a better team than them. they just capitalized on rookie mistakes that can be corrected.

i mean, we dominated them in general – other than 30 crucial seconds that changed the game.

    flacco is for fucking real.

Early reports are saying that Mendenhall has a fractured shoulder and is done for the season. The Steelers won on the scoreboard but lost the injury battle in a big way. The Ravens played some seriously physical ball.

This division is wide open as of now. It’s gonna be a hell of a run from here to December.

I was frustrated by some stupid penalties (Johnson), but I liked how Harbaugh was in his ear when he got to the sideline. Obviously I would have like to see a different outcome, but BBOL is right. We completely outplayed them. They won in 15 seconds when our rookie made a mistake. Flacco does look for real, and this is one of (if not the) toughest environments he’s going to play in all year. Anyone know what the time of possession battle was (I’m late for work or I’d look it up). I’d think we had to have won that pretty handily.

I wish we didn’t have Ten and Ind in the next two weeks. I’ll be happy if we go 1-1 there. And I think we’ll go 1-1, giving Ten their first loss hopefully.

Yeah despite my knee-jerk comments I came away ultimately impressed. For one, it was just a great game to watch. Real deal ground n pound game, so to speak. They lived up to the hype of this being a “heavy weight match”.

Flacco certainly learned a lesson about protecting the ball, eh? But he didn’t throw an interception, he showed that he’s not too stupid to throw the ball away at times, and after turning the ball over he led the team right back down the field to tie the game. You don’t see that with Ravens football in the 4th quarter. That’s something real quarterbacks do.

Indianapolis doesn’t look very good recently, I think we can beat the Colts but not the Titans. We can run all day on the Colts.

I saw Flacco in the locker room last night and said to him, “any chance you can pitch, too?”

  • I don’t understand why Johnson is getting all this flack from the press. Yes, he committed a penalty. So did a number of other players. Did Johnson make Santonio Holmes avoid 3 defenders for a TD? Did Johnson fail to block James Harrison half the game?

Every play counts. There is no way to pin a loss on one player, especially for a single bad play. There were 100+ plays in this game, and they all contributed to the outcome of the game equally. That’s my rant.
