Technical Difficulties (Please Stand By)
Sorry to everyone who tried to access the site last night/this morning. Something weird was/is happening with my host and we had some ugly downtime. Things appear to be working for now, though, so hopefully it’s in the past. I’m waiting and seeing on that.
Stay tuned later today for the latest installment of the Sports Media Approval Ratings. It’s gonna be a doozy…
Didn’t know where to put this. From MLBTR, who sniped it from Rosenthal:
Estimated Cost of Texiera: 8yrs 160M
Yowsers.
Rosenthal says not to count out the birds, but we’re not front runners either.
That’s a little pricey for my tastes – although I fear the looming power outage, especially because Millar, Mora and Huff are leading the way this year, and I don’t think any of them are the future of anything.
Ugh. 8 years. 160M. Sounds like a JD Drew-esque prison sentence waiting to happen.
Yeah fuck that.
Everything has to get compared to the Sox, doesn’t it, Joe?
Signing him to that contract (or a similar one) would certainly limit flexibility when injuries come up.
So there’s all this pressure, and if he sucks, AT ALL, then we are all up in arms over here. I can tell you that much.
Then when he starts playing “decent” and up to his value, everyone starts the glorification and praise (hence the JD Drew analogy, andrea)
I want NO part of all the BS that comes with a contract like that. I hope the Orioles do not either.
BUT
If we don’t sign Tex
then how do you replace the power of the guys like Millar, Mora, and Huff?
I don’t think anyone wants to resign any of those 3 dudes
so what do you do?
That’s a real good question…who plays first next year? Who’s DHing and at first in 2010? Who’s at third in 2010?
I wonder if Reimold can play first…?
First of all, there’s no way that Tex signs HERE for 8 years. There’s just not enough proof yet, from his point of view, that this team will be a legit contender.
Second of all, the only way we DO get him is if we match or beat the Yankees on price. That’s not exactly feasible for any team other than the Cubs or Red Sox.
So we’re looking at what, like 5 years, 80 mil, maybe more? I’d be ok with that seeing as our depth at 1B is piss poor. But anymore than 5 years and I say fuck it. To hell with Mark Texiera. He’s declining anyway. Frankly, I’m so sick of hearing about this douchebag that “might” “consider” “maybe” coming to his “hometown” that I’m more inclined to have Brandon Tripp, Billy Rowell, or Oscar Fucking Salazar playing The Easy Infield Position.
Wow, there Dan. I still like the guy.
By the way, anyone hear Chris Ray on Bob Haynie’s show today? I missed it, and can’t listen to it right now, but I’m sure it was interesting to hear from him…I’m very curious to see how the bullpen shakes out with 4 guys coming back into it in the next 12 months (though you assume Loewen won’t stay there…right?) not to mention F-Cab, whose tearing up the minors at the moment.
Lots and lots of roster questions to ponder.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the guy too and I hope he does play here. I’m just saying we’re not doomed if we don’t get him.
We have great depth in relief this year and that’s why our record is so much better. We still don’t, however have any legit starting depth that is immediately available. Hayden Penn is doing nothing to say, “Hey I’m not washed up at 24″. Can’t believe in this kid until he shows us something. Liz and Olson are already up due to Adam Loewen and Steve Trachsel. Johnson is staying put. Albers might find a way into the rotation with Bierd and Loewen coming back and Cormier doing a nice job out of the ‘pen. Jon Leicester is no good. Who else is there? You can never have enough pitching.
The key phrase being “immediately available”…but you absolutely have to like the starting corps we have down in the minors. We’ve all heard the names before: Erbe, Tillman, Arrieta, Bascom, Penn, Spoone, Renshaw, Beato…I’m definitely most impressed with, obviously, Tillman and Arrieta
Woah, wait a minute…
Chris Ray was on the air on WNST? That’s some relatively ground-breaking shit, right? Or does that rule only apply to active roster Orioles?
I guess. I couldn’t stand that they complained about not having Orioles over constantly (I guess they have a very good point, but still I really don’t care about hearing from Jeremy Guthrie about how nice it is to bike to the ballpark everyday or whatever) and don’t care if I hear from the athletes or not.
That said, it was good to hear that Ray seems to be getting healthy (even though he wasn’t a great interview) and that he should be back before the end of the year successfully.
Also: Bob Haynie destroys Anita Marks when it comes to everything. So letting Ray talk to him instead of anyone was nice to hear, too.
I agree with pretty much all of that.
