The Waters Era Begins
The great thing about Chris Waters making his first start tonight is that it creates ample opportunity for awful puns. If he pitches a complete game I guarantee you some dopey reporter will use the line “Waters Runs Deep,” or some variation thereof. It’s just a shame he’s not pitching out of the bullpen, because then we’d have “Waters Puts Out Fire” at the ready for every time he inherited a dicey situation.
We’ll have to wait and see how that plays out. In the meantime we have the game, which will feature Waters matched up against ten game winner Jon Garland. The fun stat of the day is this: in six at-bats against Garland this year, Aubrey Huff has hit .500 with a home run and three RBI.
I’ll be out this evening but should be checking in at some point late-ish. Here’s hoping…
my prediction: Waters Quenches O’s Thirst For A Win
Mine: Rough Waters in Anaheim for O’s
Man, those are good. I especially like “Rough Waters in Anaheim for O’s”. I wish I’d thought of it.
Angels Offense Puts Orioles in Icy Waters
Orioles Pitching Takes On Too Many Waters
Orioles’ Waters Makes Big Splash in Debut
Oh, and look! Schmuck already got to Waters Run Deep!
headline i’d kill to see:
High Waters Keeps Orioles From Getting Wet
Why get so fancy?
“O’s lose again, still in last place”
Doesn’t that sum it up?
Well done, Drew. And no, it doesn’t exactly sum it up, but thanks for playing.
Ben, are you saying Waters gets caught with drugs on his person and is ejected after a strong debut of 7 shutout innings? Seems likely.
Jones is done for the year, and Montanez is here to take his/Scott’s place. Scott is also banged up. Well shit, but let’s hope all that hot hitting just carries into the big leagues for Lou.
no i’m saying he has weed in his system and pitches a no hitter. maybe a modern day doc ellis?
nevermind. too political, right?
how about:
drew forrester waters down all positivity at the loss column?
I think a perfect game while stoned to the bone in your major league debut is neither too much to ask nor all that unlikely. Anything less and this will be a watered down game.
buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks
Erbe Threw A No Hitter Tonight!
Well, Erbe and two other guys. All the same, that’s incredibly exciting, because it’s the third outing this year that Erbe has dominated in this year. He’s been a little up and down, but I think he’ll be seeing Bowie and above sooner rather than later.
Meanwhile, Waters goes 1-2-3 after Garland looks Mussina (2007)-esque. So far, a great night in Birdland.
Waters made Chone Figgins look ridiculous. Three pitches right down the middle. All looking.
BBM, I had you pegged as a football cat and then you throw Doc Ellis at me. Well done!
DF – come on man! Don’t be so lame. There’s ten plus negative Os blogs to hit up, you know how we roll here.
2-0 top 5. Love to see them hang onto this one and see this headline tomorrow:
Os Break Their Waters and Deliver A Win!
O’s Pitcher Lands Angel Batsin Hot Waters
I’m ready to call this a successful debut. Thanks, Chris. The trick will be not turning into a pumpkin in the next 2 weeks.
No runs, one hit and two Ks through six.
I’m impressed.
Three walks is sort of bunk.
But I can dig the fact that I’m digging for negatives.
Angels Offense Drowned By Os Waters
So I was off tonight at the Neil Diamond concert down in DC, which is why I wasn’t on the Ungers show and why I’m just chiming in now here. And…holy crap! 7 innings of one-hit ball? This suprasses every — every — expectation. My hat’s off to this kid regardless of how the game turns out.
Interesting decision here on Sherrill. I understand the need to get him back on his horse, but if this doesn’t go well it’s going to look really, really bad. They’ll hang Trembley in effigy at some of the other O’s sites. And on the radio.
I won’t do it here, though. I’m on record right now saying it’s the right move no matter how it turns out. We got more than we expected out of Waters and there’s no need to push it. This is Sherrill’s job, and there’s no reason not to send him back out there to do it.
Now, with fingers crossed, here goes nothing…
Ignore my post in the last thread that asks why we sent down Burres.
And that, folks, was one hell of a win.
Wow.
Since this is a website all about nicknames for players, I wanted to comment on the one Schmuck inadvertently gave Chris Waters after saying putting him in against the Angels was like taking a poodle to Michael Vicks house. Steve Physioc for the Angels broadcasting team commented that the Poodle was tearing up the pitbull right now.
Chris “Poodle” Waters. I laughed.
didn’t see the results until 0530 this AM, and WOW!! What a great story, and what an outstanding win.
Another great example of winning pitching w/o the 95+ mph fastball.
Already a “crafty” lefty at 27, Waters showed some serious stuff tonight in a truly difficult situation. Obviously, he exceeded the loftiest expectations – except his own. Based on the few quotes from him, and his reactions to pre-game stuff, etc., it seems this guy believes in himself, and then he went out and showed it.
One game wonder? Who knows, but I think the minor league brain trust that recommended him is to be commended, as well as Trembley for saying okay – give ‘em the ball and let’s see what happens.
Let’s take another one today, and my earlier 2 of 3 prediction will seem pretty saavy, rather than wildly optimistic.
Drew – since when did standings matter this season? This team won’t have a late summer swoon and that’s the most important thing because for the first time in years, the O’s have an actual team with an actual real live baseball manager, and they’re making progress. You’re a downer and I don’t like you.
WATERS – can you believe this? Can he repeat it? Obviously, probably not, but hot damn, if he can do anything resembling it, that would be incredible. Good for the kid – it takes guts to pitch in that situation.
