Trade Deadline Open Thread

let\'s make a handshake dealIt was mighty nice of the MLB powers to have the Orioles off on deadline day. Not that I expect much to happen, but it’s always safe to assume something will surprise. Maybe not O’s-related, but something.

The big question is whether or not Manny Ramirez will be on the move, whether it’s to Florida or somewhere else. Ken Griffey Jr. appears to be headed to the White Sox. Beyond that there’s a host of other, smaller rumors that don’t necessarily affect us one way or another.

I still do think the O’s will make a move of some kind, maybe a Bradford deal or some move to bring in a starter. It looks to me like ‘Ol Flatbrim will stick around for now. There aren’t any solid rumors that I know of, but things change fast.

So, here’s the spot to discuss it.

Ramirez. . .what a cancer for any team. . .pathetic that his productivity, which is stupendous, affords him the ability to continually act like an immature idiot.

I would not touch that guy with a 10 ft. pole. . .

appears the O’s will remain dormant, which is not a surprise right now.

believe they’ll give Penn a starting opportunity, and bring Sarfate back for another start as well.

MLB Trade Rumors reports that “the Twins asked about Brian Roberts but couldn’t get anywhere.”

  • Ryan

Any truth to the rumor that MacPhail has a press conference scheduled for today? I just heard that one through the grapevine. If it’s true, what could he be prepared to talk about?

  • Andrew out of Rochester

With Pudge, Laird, and Bengie seemingly off the table, you have to imagine the Marlins are thinking long and hard about Ramon.

Com’on Odin, you’ve never let me down before.

  • jason23 go twinkies

twins WILL get either brian roberts, mark grudzielanek, jose castillo or rich aurillia. also maybe either beltre or atkins

  • jason23 go twinkies also

TWINS NEEEEEEEEED TO MAKE A DEAL OTHERWISE THEY WILL FINISH IN 3RD PLACE. WHICH I DONT WANT.

  • PIZZA PIE GUY

c’mon we all know the twins wont make a deal! they never do. they are so FRUSTRATING sometimes.

  • billy

is it true the twins wont talk with orioles about brian roberts. are the talks over?

  • neal s

Sorry, fellas, but I don’t see Roberts going anywhere.

  • neal s

What the hell was that, jjjjjjjj…? I’m not in the business of deleting comments but you gave me no choice. Don’t be that way.

  • Andrew out of Rochester

That was weird. How’d a twins board end up here ?

  • neal s

You got me, but I have a suspicion that it was actually just one dude having some fun. Whatever works.

Meanwhile I think it’s safe to say the Orioles won’t be doing much of anything today. I’m a little bit surprised, but this certainly will make August interesting.

  • rick

glad the O’s appear to be standing pat for the moment. . .I truly trust that MacPhail would have pulled the trigger had the right deal been available. . .

I still believe this ballclub can win 85 games. . .and no, that’s not enough to be satisfied, but certainly far exceeds anyone’s wildest expectations for THIS year.

Then, I expect a busy offseason and another excellent draft.

  • Andrew out of Rochester

    Dammit – my fantasy teeeeam!

Manny to the Dodgers, so he’ll never bother us ever again, thank God.

I can’t see the Sox competing with the barely recognizable Yankees and the surging Rays without their thumper. I really can’t.

I’m also glad to see the O’s not lower our price just to get a deal done. Like I said, a lot of what we have to do is wait for these bad contracts to run out and then replace them with good contracts. You can’t trade bad contracts. Too bad Ramon isn’t a Marlin, though (but that might still happen in August)

  • Joe the Guy

Andy you’re wrong the sox were dragging around an anchor for a long time.

Although they used to, his stats have not justified his behavior for a long time.

Waivers in 03, Arod trade in 04, his latest scarface-esqe “bad guy” comments sealed the deal

    This was inevitable (right DtM?)

As for the Os, the common theme I read with Flat, Brob and even Huff was an incredible asking price. Which is a good thing. In AndyMac We Trust.

/sigh. Never make bets on the trade deadline, fellas…

The conference call was just MacPhail explaining why no moves were made. Honestly, that should be obvious: no teams offered anything good. So it goes. Now we will be subjected to reactionary, knee-jerk, pissy O’s fans thinking this was some big failure. Wake me up next week.

  • random dude

I’m disappointed, but only in that no other team would offer anything good and Andy Mac couldn’t fleece anyone out there this go-round. Nothing can be done about that. I still expect a small trade with people who could pass through waivers (Ramon, please). Hey DtM, I like how you laid into Tracy over there at Schmuck’s new blog. Well done, haha.

  • Greg

In MacPhail I trust. If there weren’t any good offers that made us better at the end of the day, you shouldn’t make a trade for the sake of making a trade.

That said, there is always August, and there is always the offseason where more teams become involved and the chances of making a trade are better.

The Pirates are a perfect example of jumping the gun on trades and the mediocre results of making a trade to make a trade.
