Will Billick Coach Again?

WIth yesterday’s surprise dismissal of Broncos institution Mike Shanahan, the total number of official NFL head coaching vacancies swells to four (along with the Browns, Lions, and Jets). The Raiders and Rams might make new hires, as well, so the soil is fertile for anybody looking to step up. Or…get back in.

It has me thinking about erstwhile Ravens leader and multimedia yeoman Brian Billick.

It’s clear that his departure served the home team well, and I’d be surprised if there’s anybody out there who’d take him over John Harbaugh. What I’m wondering is: just because he wore out his welcome here, does that mean he’s damaged goods?

I don’t have an answer for this, I’m just genuinely curious. Thought I’d throw it out there and see what the speculation is.

  • It’d kill me to see him in Denver. Billick is one of the major reasons I’ve never appreciated the Ravens, a sentiment that’s been relatively tempered this year. We’ll see how I feel after watching them — and their fans — in the playoffs this year.

Denver is in a situation where they need an A+ coach with real defensive focus. Billick isn’t that guy and I believe Bowlen knows it. Cowher on the other hand… is still not likely to go to Denver but it’d sure be nice.

I doubt that one bad year in charge of the Ravens is really going to ruin Brian Billick’s reputation. The dude went 13-3 the previous year, and has a Super Bowl ring. If that’s damaged goods, I’d take it in a heartbeat. Sure, he’s kind of annoying to listen to when he’s talking about himself – but I guarantee that if he had Joe Flacco, we’d all be talking about how much of a genius he is today. I can see him taking over the Jets or Broncos (and Cowher, who is also a giant douchebag, will probably get the other job).

So, I’ve thought about it long and hard, and here are my playoff picks. Joe, feel free to put up a bet; I assume you’ll be picking New England to win it all.

    AFC:

    Ravens over Dolphins
    Colts over Chargers
    Ravens over Titans
    Colts over Steelers
    Colts over Ravens

    NFC:

    Falcons over Cardinals
    Vikings over Eagles
    Falcons over Giants
    Panthers over Vikings
    Panthers over Falcons

So, yeah Colts and Panthers in the Super Bowl, and I don’t see a happy ending for Ravens fans, if you know what I mean…

And, hey, Neal, no take on Willis McGahee? If Kevbo Millar said those things it’d be up in 5 minutes here.

My quick take: What a fugging moron. He gets out of Buffalo and badmouths the city (although, I’ve been to Buffalo and basically agree with him), which you should never do because 1) it’s a lame thing to do, 2) it makes you look like a moron, and 3) it gives the Bills motivation to beat your ass when they meet you (Which they did!). Now he’s already talking his way out of the good graces of Baltimore – blaming his craptastic year on Baltimore’s new Wonder Man Harbaugh. And then doesn’t explain himself in a good way when given the chance.

What a damn moron. Thanks, Willis.

I don’t know, Andrew…it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal to me. I don’t think Willis McGahee thinks much before he opens his mouth, but he’s pretty harmless.

    Today’s the big day…

Also, Tomás is right about outdoor hockey. The Winter Classic is one of the coolest things in sports right now.
