Adam Jones: Golden

Adam Jones wins the Gold GloveRaise your hand if you saw this one coming at the end of the season, and be honest. Adam Jones won a Gold Glove today, becoming the first Orioles outfielder to pull off that feat since Paul Blair.

I wouldn’t have guessed it, but I do think he deserves it as much as anybody. And as Dave Trembley points out in the article, it’s a testament to the fact that more folks are taking note of the Orioles’ stable of young talent. These awards usually go to veterans, and guys tend to win them over and over again once they break through. Not saying that will happen with Jones necessarily, but it’s a pretty nice accomplishment.

So, congrats to Adam. This is a good way to kick off what figures to be an active — and hopefully actively discussed — Hot Stove season.

One other note: the O’s picked up right-hander Armando Gabino from the Twins yesterday. Nothing really remarkable about that other than it’s a good depth move as the team looks to reconfigure and strengthen their shaky bullpen.

It’s just a shame that while I’m psyched to see Jonesy get some big-time recognition, it’s gotta be for one of the biggest jokes of an award around, and it’s a double shame that while his defense is terrific, he really didn’t deserve the award this year.

But then, neither do most of the award recepients. Baseball’s dumb this way.

Good for Jonesy. Should have gone to Markakis like every other year, but we all know right fielders don’t get this award. Jones’ defense took a bit of a nose-dive this season, but he still made some ridiculous plays out there and he’s obviously capable of being a steady gold-glove caliber guy out there. More than anything, though, it’s about recognition. FINALLY, some national props.
