Another Round of Late Night Baseball
There he is again, holding that fish.
And there he’ll be on the mound tonight, opposite my man David…air-NAN-dez. 10:10 first pitch out in Seattle.
It’s a safe bet that the Mariners will move the mercurial lefty before or at the deadline and attempt to get back some of what they lost when they picked him up. If/when that happens, it’ll be interesting to see how he responds to the pressure of being brought in to help a contender make a playoff push. I like the guy but I can see that type of situation becoming explosive, and fast. He doesn’t seem built to shoulder that kind of pressure.
It’s so nice to think of him becoming a free agent and not feel any need to advocate that the Orioles pick him back up. To my mind, we just don’t need him. At least not at the kind of price he’s going to get.
Yes, but…it would just make our victory over the Mariners complete.
But at the price he’s likely to get from someone (Angels, Mets, Dodgers, Braves, Cubs maybe? …I have a very hard time seeing Bedard succeed in any sort of large market like New York, Boston, or Chicago), the O’s would be best served elsewhere.
Sigh. I love that fish. Now let’s go bash his fucking brains in.
Great call on the Braves. He’d be a perfect fit with an NL team that takes a low-key approach but still has a (mostly) winning tradition.
That up there is, and probably will forever be, the greatest picture ever posted at TLC. I don’t even know where I found it but I’m damn glad I did. So good.
I’m betting that David Hernandez’s greatest weakness (walks) doesn’t show up much tonight against a team that hates walking (the M’s are dead last in the category because they are dumb). Keep the ball in the park, ‘er-NAN-dez, and you WILL succeed. The O’s need to get to the bullpen for the team to succeed, but our pitcher is not my worry (at this pre-game point) tonight.
Bedard is going to mow us the hell down, especially since we are fresh off of Verlander, Jackson, and Washburn. What a stretch to encourage a nice offensive slump… yeesh.
Hernandez off to a rocky start but he could easily put up a bunch of zeroes from here on out with Seattle’s lineup.
Bah… Air Nan Dez ain’t got it tonight. If they M’s score any more runs, this game’s as good as over with Bedard on the mound. Although with Bedard it’s a good bet he won’t go past 6 innings.
So was that just a bad play from Reimold in the 1st inning or what? I missed it. He’s looked rough out there recently.
@dan the man – misjudged it a little.
Hernandez does not look sharp (of course not…I gave him a vote of confidence finally).
God damn Bedard is nasty.
Three runs through three is not good, but let’s see what air-NAN-dez does from here. And even if he basically stinks it up, we really won’t have any sense of him until he’s had 5-6 starts.
Of course he might not get that many with Koji coming back, but that’d be OK too. If he has to go back down to Norfolk and continue to put up numbers there, so be it.
I’m going to be annoyed at myself for staying up and watching this entire game, I just know it.
Big K right there on 3-2 from Dave with Ichiro in scoring position.
Roberts lets two down-the-middle fastballs goes by for 2 strikes and then strikes out swinging on a third. Now I know what it felt like when fans had to watch their team face Bedard. Man o man..
Yeah, time to write this one off. It happens. I suppose the opportunity exists to have one of those Birdland comebacks against the M’s bullpen, but I doubt it. I’m going to hit the hay soon with visions of the rubber match dancing in my head.
BB versus Jason Vargas, who has been good. I still like our chances.
Best at bat Reimold’s had all year right there in the 7th. Makes Bedard throw about 10 pitches, draws the walk, and chases him from the game.
This stretch of pitching has been so brutal, but it’s like.. well, you’re going to have to find ways to beat these top tier pitchers eventually if you want to compete.
Vargas has been lucky more than good. His opponents (and results) have been: Rangers (bad but lucky), Red Sox (very poor but somehow only gave up 2 runs), Giants (very good), Angels (bad but lucky). He’s a fly ball pitcher who doesn’t strike a lot of guys out and has benefited from a .221 BABIP. Don’t be shocked if the Orioles break out their bats tonight.
On the other hand, Brad Bergesen is a heavy sink ground ball pitcher who doesn’t strike guys out with a normal .316 BABIP. I feel like because BB is so fringy, if he misses his spot it tends to get hit hard, which accounts for what feels like a ton of line drives (34 of them in total).
Anyway, BB’s opponents and results: White Sox (good), Rangers (very poor), Blue Jays (bad but lucky), Twins (good), Rays (mediocre), Yankees (very poor but lucky), Nats (mediocre), Tigers (great). So I’m thinking we have no idea what we’re going to get out of Bergesen.
I’m bored and it’s early. This is why I hate west coast baseball. But I’ll call it: O’s win tonight.
I’m ready for Koji to come back. Man Bedard drives me crazy…and classic 6 inning outing from him.
@Andrew – Yeah, the Mariners aren’t an especially patient hitting team (without doing any research), and it looks like Hernandez got behind in the count and then left fastballs up and they got hit. If BB has good sink tonight, he might get a lot of hacks from the Mariners that result in ground balls.
Offensively, the Orioles are due (by the way, Andrew, do you believe in being “due”?) and it’s killing me to see Huff, Markakis, and Jones so unproductive. The good news is Markakis broke a horrible streak last night of not walking in something like 13 games (WTF?!), and Jones got 2 hits. It also looks like Huff has been hitting into some real bad luck.
@dan the man – No, you can’t be “due”. I know that sounds typical of me, but if you’re flipping a coin, does the odds of it coming up heads go up because you just flipped 4 tails in a row? Of course not. It’s called “The Gambler’s Fallacy”, so I know I must be right.
I just realized, in exciting news, that Garabez Rosa is playing for the Shorebirds now!
