Baseball Word of the Week: Rhubarb
Baseball’s capacity to surprise me shows no signs of weakening.
I was digging around in the Life magazine image archives looking for interesting Baltimore-related treasures when I came across the photo you see at left. The caption reads: umpire during a ‘rhubarb’ between Orioles and Senators.
Being naturally curious, I set about discovering what exactly that meant. Turns out the term dates to 1943 and means “a ruckus with the umpire(s)” or “a fight between players or between the players and fans” (at least according to this page).
How can you not love that?
Nice look at the original “Baltimore” script typography, too. I can’t wait to see the new version in action this summer.
I’m starting to feel it. Mark Hendrickson be damned, I’m starting to feel it.
Good start so far in Simon’s big big big start. Very good, in fact. He’s facing a real life Mets lineup and is pitching outstanding. It’d be nice to see him take the horse by the reins.
Interestingly, it seems like whenever I notice Simon come out of the pen he stinks, but when he starts he rocks. Is that just me, or are other people noticing it, too? (Naturally, small sample size issues complicate the picture)
