Catching Up With Lost Links
Lately I’ve been a total dope when it comes to linking up the things people send me. I save these emails right in my inbox, and then they slip down so far that I forget them entirely. Not good policy, not cool.
So tonight, I want to catch up a bit. Hopefully the folks on the other end will understand.
– Got a cool email awhile back from a guy named Josh. He’s working on a documentary about the baseball academy system in the Dominican Republic called Live to Play – Play to Live. The movie includes some interviews with former Orioles including Tejada and the DC Cab and it looks like it’s going to be interesting. Plus, at least a couple of the guys involved are big time O’s fans. That’s a win. Check ‘em out and give them some love.
You can also watch the ten-minute short they’ve already produced.
– Did you know that Baseball Digest is now online? And that they’ve got an Orioles page that includes a link to us? Solid, solid stuff. That’ll be bookmarked.
– There’s a new O’s blog on the scene called Birds Watcher. The more the merrier.
– Finally, I got contacted recently about having TLC join the MVN network of blogs. I haven’t responded yet, but I’m pretty sure I’m not going to do it. The added traffic would be nice but I’d have to reconfigure the design, host more ads, and change the back-end system from WordPress to Movable Type. None of those things really appeals to me. But…I thought I’d throw it out there and see what you all thought. If it was something the community deemed worthwhile, I’d take another look at it.
I think that covers things for now. If I missed you, it means I probably never got the email. Thanks to everyone who sends me links and whatnot. I read them all and, eventually, do something with them.
Man, Rex Ryan is killing us. WTF, I thought the Ravens were improving. Why didn’t we offer a starting job to Leonhard? All we’ve got left is Ray Lewis only because nobody else wants him. And after his debacle of an offseason, I’m not sure I really care about the Ray Lewis legacy in Baltimore.
yeah where is BBM through all of this?
someone should call to check up on him and keep him away from sharp objects.
Jim Leonhard can’t have a starting job because Landry will be back next year. Obviously one of them will have to be backup, and Leonhard can be a starter and get paid starter money elsewhere. It’s simply a case of too much talent at one position. I can’t blame him for leaving, it was crowded here.
I’m not sure Landry deserves a starting gig over Leonhard. Dude had a spinal concussion – you don’t necessarily come back the same after an injury like that.
I really hope the Ravens don’t draft a wide receiver, and sign somebody legit instead.
Don’t look now, Drew Forrester fans, but it seems his influence ranges far beyond just this friendly little blog. He’s over at the OH trying to defend Nestor’s “Orioles Hangout is on the Orioles payroll” comments from the other day and doing rather poorly against Tony and the gang over there. I encourage you all to check it out.
Is it just me or are Drew and Nestor really trying to get under the skin of the Baltimore blogosphere? You want my take? The personal vendetta and criticisms of the team aren’t really coming across over the airwaves like they used to. There’s an awful lot of positive, forward-thinking O’s fans out there, mostly on the internet, and Drew/Nestor are using desperate bash-tactics in a bid for attention from them. The thing is…. before, the O’s were run badly. Now that they’re largely not, at least not as bad as any other baseball organization, what’s there really to get up in arms about?
Thus, you have a failing message on a failing radio station, and some desperate lashing-out on the internet. It’s sad, really.
Landry was a fringe starter before his injury. I’m sure they had their reasons, but letting Leonhard go looks like a mistake to me.
Speaking of Baseball Digest, check out this 1962 article on the construction of the Astrodome. We’ve not only arrived in the future, we’ve passed it by.
@dan the man – That shit’s pretty funny.
I was actually thinking just the other day about TLC and my own editorial voice here, which is obviously fairly positive and bullish. And I was thinking, “do I need to post more criticism and negativity to balance it out?”
And the honest to god truth is that I find criticism for its own sake boring. I also think it’s lazy. I feel like I’m negative when I need to be, but most of the time I’m simply offering what I believe is an honest, balanced opinion/analysis. And if I’m doing something like mentioning the free tickets or “stimulus” promotions, well, it’s because I think they’re good ideas. It’s not as if I’m just passing along every press release I get.
All of which goes to say: I don’t know how we (not just here or on O’s sites, but the Big We) arrived at this notion that credibility is derived from bitching. It’s a sad state of affairs.
@neal s – The general vibe I’ve been getting from the talking heads on 105.7, a lot of people disagree with you about Landry being a fringe starter. I’ve been of the opinion that both Leonhard and Landry are a similar level of talent with different skill sets.
Well said.
Re: Baseball Digest, that site looks like something I will be enjoying. But it seemed like it had some problems with its links earlier. I’ll check it out again.
@Greg – that could be true. Landry might do things well that aren’t as visible to someone watching the game more casually. Maybe his reads are great and/or he’s always in position, things like that. I’m probably placing too much emphasis on “playmaking” ability, which I suppose is just one of many factors a team like the Ravens will use when evaluating talent.
