Greg Miclat’s Orioles Advantage
Steroids talk, the apparently tragic and disturbing news about Roberto Alomar…these are not the reasons I watch baseball.
So it was nice to finally have a smile cross my face when I read this story about farmhand Greg Miclat’s “legal troubles”:
Greg Miclat, a UVa. student who signed last year with the Orioles, was clocked at 73 mph in a 60-mph zone in Culpeper, according to the Free Lance-Star.
Judge Jack Berry, though, is a “lifelong Orioles fan,” so when he found out Miclat’s occupation, he let the North Carolina shortstop slide with an online defensive driving class instead of having him return to Virginia to take it in person.
“The Orioles need all the help they can get,” Berry reportedly said.
Nice.
Greg got lucky…from what I’ve heard, they don’t fool around when it comes to speeding tickets in VA.
Lifelong Preferential Treatment like this is the reason that down the line ballplayers think they have the right to give out STDs like autographs.
What a craptastic day. Is there literally even a speck of good baseball news out there anymore? I’m real bummed.
That Lifelong Preferential Treatment comes with years of dedicating your life to a purpose and being the best at it. Anyone can be a baseball player, but how many people actually do it? And are good at it? I’m sure Miclat worked his tail off to get where he is now.
Preferential treatment maybe…but it’s just a damn speeding ticket, and not a very bad one at that. We could use more judges/people in positions of authority with good attitudes like this.
I hear you, Andrew. it’s a tough time but, hey, pitchers and catchers in three days.

What’s the word on the fantasy league?
Great performance by the USA tonight with the 2-0 housing of Mexico. The biggest hurdle in WC qualifying has been cleared. Hey everybody….SOCCER!!!
Wow, you’re going there, huh?
Actually I’m kind of glad Chris went there. I had an event tonight but otherwise I would have been watching.
I had no idea it was even happening… but then again, I don’t have cable so that doesn’t help. I’m not above watching some soccer on TV – it’s fun to watch for sure.
DtM, no progress on the fantasy league since Yahoo! hasn’t reopened it yet for the new season. I’m assuming they will on saturday or soon.
@Tomás – I just created another fantasy baseball league on Yahoo yesterday, so maybe check again? Plenty of time, though, I was just curious.
Hey, Ramon Hernandez died last week. That’s pretty sad.
…no, the other one:

Uehara working on some new pitches:

anxious to see Uehara pitch. . .there’s clearly an air of mystery involved, and he’s certainly the staff wildcard in terms of what he may or may not bring to the mound.
