I’m Out On the Limb
So tonight we have Adam Eaton on the hill in Boston against Josh Beckett. And I’m going to go ahead and predict an Orioles win.
Madness, you say? Indeed. That’s the genius of it.
I can’t remember the last O’s game that so loudly and obviously cried for mercy. On paper we have zero chance, with our worst pitcher (arguably one of MLB’s worst pitchers) up against one of their best, in their house, with all the momentum suddenly going their way. By all rights we should lose this one 10-3.
With everything laid out so perfectly for a Sox win I see a great opportunity for the Baseball Gods to turn conventional wisdom on its head (as we know they love to do).
Why not?
That said, as of right now I plan to neither watch nor listen.
Way to be a fan, Neal.
There’s no such thing as momentum, but other than that, I guess I agree with you. Oh, except we are totally going to get crushed tonight.
I am however very interested to see how Uehara competes in Boston, which has to be like the most popular team in Japan.
@Greg – In my defense I’m going to a party where the game just won’t be on. I’m not boycotting or anything.
Roch has the Wieters update that basically nothing has changed, Wieters is day-to-day, but it’s probably nothing too severe.
Whew.
Hey, at least we don’t have Chien Ming Wang pitching for us.
20-2 in the Bronx Bandbox
@neal s – Lol, I’m just joshin ya.
@neal s – I didn’t watch the game last night either.
Roch’s got the news: Bergesen’s starting on Tuesday, Wieters is probably out 3-4 days.
Meanwhile, Adam Eaton is singlehandedly making me lose my will to live. He is awful out there. There’s not even any sort of good side to things: he doesn’t eat innings, he doesn’t put up zeros, he does walk people, and he doesn’t give the Orioles a chance to win or even not go to their awful, awful bullpen by the 5th.
In summary, he is The Third Coming of Steve Trachsel.
And the offense wakes up at long last.
Izturis and Zaun are really scuffling, it was nice to see Cesar start this rally with a perfect bunt base hit when Lowell wasn’t expecting it.
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m getting pretty fucking tired of Felix Pie. I know it’s real early and if he has a hot week next week we’ll all be gushing about him and how great it is to be patient – and we really need to be patient – but I’m getting really fucking tired of Felix Pie.
@Andrew – Steve Trachsel actually won games and shut some teams down the first year he was here. Eaton does not deserve a major league job. The experiment should be over, but you know they’re going to give him a few more starts. Ugh. Come oonnnnn Rich Hill.
Good to hear Bergesen is getting the call. Good luck, kid. You’re gonna need it.
Pie stinks. Unlike Jones, you can just tell he has no baseball instincts. Reimold or Montanez. Come on, Andy. You can’t let these guys rot in the minor leagues. It ain’t right. And yes, I’m being impatient. We have a chance to be decent this year, but it’s like we’re raising the white flag already.
@dan the man – When I call Eaton the Third Coming, it’s mostly because he is the Second Coming of the Second Coming of the trash man, who REALLY couldn’t get anyone out to save his mother’s life.
I take issue with the idea that Nolan Reimold (my pick for 2010 left fielder) is rotting in the minors when the guy is playing his first games at AAA ever and is only 25. He’s not rotting. Montanez probably is, but he’s not really a long term solution anyway. We can’t really get burned by seeing what Pie can do if given 300 or so at bats anyway…but right now he looks bad in the field and bad at the plate. And someone needs to help him out or stop him.
@Andrew – I hear you on the Rotting Factor. Like I said, I’m just impatient at the moment. And like you said, if Pie has a torrid week, I’m singing a different tune. But he’s pretty much a guy who’s guilty until proven innocent.
Luckily, MacPhail didn’t decide to go with a guy like Waters to replace Simon (although that’d be better than watching Eaton). But what I’m saying is: it’s encouraging that he went right the guy we all wanted him to go to. He didn’t choose to tinker with Waters due to Bergesen having so few starts yet in AAA. We don’t want to go too overboard with the “don’t rush” line of thinking so it’s nice to hear we’ll be seeing Brad in April – just like we thought we might coming out of ST.
Brad Bergesen isn’t being rushed. He’s almost to the point where he’s too old to be relevent. Unlike Waters, Bergesen has control and could probably be a decent #4 starter in the bigs, and while that sounds bad, we desperately need someone to fill ANY role as a starter– if it’s fourth, so be it.
@Greg – good lord, man, he’s only 23.
Despite being Pitcher of the Year in the EL… he doesn’t make any prospect lists anywhere. Why? His age, mostly.
@Greg – Wrong! Bergesen doesn’t make many prospect lists because he doesn’t strike out a lot of batters (a mere 72 in 148 IP last year) and because he doesn’t have any overpowering qualities. His best asset is his control, instead of say, his fastball.
I mean, com’on. If 23 is too old for Bowie, then 22 is surely too old for Frederick and thus Brian Matusz won’t be making any prospect lists anytime soon…right?
