Gentlemanly Means Pursued

Six Orioles Thanks

Baltimore Orioles cartoon bird logoThanksgiving and the Internet is alive with folks telling the world about the things that make their lives better. And you know what? Cynicism be damned, I’m cool with it. It’s a little trite, sure. A little cheesy. Maybe even a lot cheesy. But I believe in saying “thanks.” I’m also a big believer in saying “fuck off” when it’s warranted, but that’s something I try to only do when I absolutely have to.

Recognizing that which matters is far more satisfying than tearing down that which doesn’t. It’s a hard lesson learned. Mostly.

So in the spirit of the holiday, here’s a contribution, Orioles-wise. I could come up with another fifteen or twenty lists on other subjects but I figure that for our purposes here the O’s make the most sense.

1. Andy MacPhail
It’s got to start with him, right? He’s the guy who came in and delivered the roadmap to success for which we’d all been yearning. Whether or not it comes to fruition remains uncertain, but aren’t you happier entering 2010 than you were 2008?

2. Adam Jones
I think he’s on the brink of becoming a superstar. Maybe not an Albert Pujols or a Derek Jeter, but definitely someone who breathes that air. I love this guy and I’m excited as hell to watch him ply his trade for the next few years.

3. Matt Wieters/Nick Markakis/Brian Roberts
True Orioles in the old mold. Humble, hardworking guys who get it done. Guys the city and the fans can be proud of. Guys we love to watch. What more do you want?

I realize it might be a tad premature to include Wieters here, but that’s my read.

4. Young Pitchers
No need to single out one or two — you know who I mean. How long has it been since we’ve had legitimate pitching depth? Guys other clubs might actually covet?

5. Camden Yards
No matter how bad the team, no matter how dismal the outlook, there has never been a moment for me when a visit to that stadium wasn’t at least a little bit awe-inspiring. Walking in and taking a seat is just fun. Always has been, always will be.

6. Peter Angelos
Not without some reservation, but I said it.

For all his shortcomings Peter Angelos is still the guy who stepped up back in 1993 and ensured that the Orioles would remain locally owned. He is also the owner who brought us our last two playoff appearances, and who has apparently stepped out of the way to let MacPhail try to build the next two. He’s a screwup in a lot of ways, but it’s time to stop hating. No need to love the guy or even like him, but just to simply acknowledge that he’s not all bad.

And, yeah, say thanks. Not for everything, just for some things. Surely we can be gracious enough to grant that. Yeah? I’m feeling generous.

What are you thankful for?

I don’t care if it’s Orioles related or even sports related. Fire the hell away. Your wife/husband/significant other? Kid(s)? Family? Job? A particularly fine single malt scotch? A great book you’ve read or movie you’ve seen? Some great weed you recently smoked?

Take a minute and let everyone reading this know what’s worthwhile. Personally, I’m stoked to hear about it. It’d be cool to learn something.

PS — Consider this also a personal “thanks” from me to you for visiting this site, whether you comment or not. I appreciate it.
