Six Reasons For Orioles Excitement
There’s no better antidote to the February Sports Doldrums than four of the finest words in the language (when strung together, that is): pitchers and catchers report.
It happens on Saturday, believe it or not, and with it comes the beginning of Loss Column baseball geekery, circa 2009. Damn if it’s not about time.
Check back tomorrow for a nice surprise regarding this year’s baseball coverage. We’ll be going into more depth than ever regarding the minor leagues, and I think you’re going to like it. In the meantime I’ve got six legitimate, kool aid-free reasons for genuine excitement.
1. Matt Wieters
It’s obvious, sure, but roll this around in your head for a minute: the Orioles have the best prospect in baseball, and he will almost certainly make his major league debut this summer. We’ve never been able to say that before, and it’s a turning point.
2. The Best Young Outfield in Baseball
We know what we’ve got with Nick Markakis, and if Adam Jones stays the course he could be nearly as good. As long as Felix Pie is simply adequate, this is as good as it gets.
To put it in perspective, the starting outfield in 2005 was Sammy Sosa, Luis Matos, and Larry Bigbie. In 2006 it was Jay Gibbons, Matos, and Jeff Conine.
3. The Role Players
Having a good bench and bullpen doesn’t mean you’ve got a winning team, but the Orioles are poised to enter 2009 with spare parts that actually, you know, work. Both Ryan Freel and Ty Wigginton could start on a lot of teams, and Gregg Zaun is a huge upgrade over Ramon in the “keep it warm for Matt” department. Combine that with what should be one of the better bullpens around and you’ve got reason to believe this will be a competitive bunch.
4. The Pitchers
Of course we’ve got the “on the way” guys like Matusz and Tillman, but I’m actually a little stoked about the competition for rotation spots 3-5. I’m expecting to see at least one or two guys step up and surprise us all, which should be fun to watch.
5. The Draft
The O’s pick fifth, which means the near-certain addition of yet another top prospect. USC shortstop Grant Green has been generating a lot of buzz and he’d fill a big need, but whoever it is figures to be a strong addition.
6. The Plan
We’ve talked about it for a year now and it never gets old. Andy MacPhail has radically altered the way the Orioles run the baseball side of the organization. Read this MacPhail Q&A and get excited all over again.
I realize that a fan in, say, Philadelphia or Los Angeles might see this list and chuckle. That’s OK. The O’s probably won’t finish .500 this year and they definitely won’t contend. But there are plenty of reason to watch, and for once it kind of feels like we don’t have to lie to ourselves to find them.
yup, it’s an exciting time, as hope springs eternal every spring for fans of every team.
Your 6 reasons are quite valid, and most importantly, the implementation and execution of “The Plan” is the foundation for the O’s ascension to greatness.
It’s really going to be fun to watch the plan come together and produce the results we’re all hoping for.
I’m having dreams of the Crab Shuffle already.
Happy baseball season!
The thing that will make me feel really good going into the season is a Roberts extension. Then it’s like, alright, they can just play ball and let everything shake out without any questions. It would be a fine capping off of a very good offseason by MacPhail.
I am extremely excited to watch As The Rotation Rotates in ST. Of the all the pitchers in ST, guys that could theoretically start are: Guthrie, Uehara, Hill, Albers, Patton, Hennessey, Hendrickson, Waters, Bass, Baez, Arrieta, Parrish, Pauley, Simon, Mitchell, Tillman, and Penn. GIT IT ON!
And before Andrew gets me, obviously Tillman wouldn’t be considered even if he lit it up in ST. I stand by the my opinion that I think Arrieta would be considered, however.
And I also forgot Liz, who I think may surprise. To me it seems like he’s been making steady progress each year, but he still might be destined for relief.
So minus Guthrie, Uehara, Hill, and Tillman, that’s 14 pitchers battling for 2 spots. You’d love to be able to go into ST saying we’ve got our 1 through 5 guys set, but where’s the fun in that??
The Angels lost K-Rod, Anderson, Teixeira, Kotchman, and Garland… if I was a fan, I would not be chuckling.
I believe the front office already said that Tillman and Arrieta will not be seen on the Orioles this year.
