Colts-Saints Super Bowl Open Thread

I don’t get the sense that there’s much Super Bowl enthusiasm around these parts, but here’s a place to talk about the game just in case. That includes the best parts like the ads, the entertainment, and the Puppy Bowl.

My guess: Saints pull the upset.

Pretty good game. I enjoyed watching the battle at the quarterback position.. it’s almost like both of those guys are so good that when a pass isn’t caught, it feels like a bigger play than when it is. I like Manning, but the NO story was just too good to really root for him.

It’s weird watching a football game with super-high completion percentages, very little penalties, and barely any running game. It’s these types of teams are playing a whole different sport. You can’t help but watch these quarterbacks and wonder if Joe Flacco can really become anything close to them. I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing the Ravens get him some weapons, and then we’ll see what we’ve got.

I was kind of amazed at how the officials kept their flags pocketed for most of the game. They had plenty of opportunities to call a hold here or interference there, but they didn’t bite. If every game was called that way I think most fans would be a lot happier with the week-to-week NFL product.

I’m fairly shocked that everything tilted on Manning throwing a pick six. Nobody would have predicted that, and certainly not in that situation. There was some banter among the group I watched with that that play might someday be seen as a turning point in his career. It certainly will be if he doesn’t get back to and win another Super Bowl.

peyton manning is 9-9 in the playoffs. and really, nobody should be that surprised by that pick six. dude has fucked up in big games since college.

it’s difficult to hate that guy in a lot of ways, but for me i LOOOOOOOVE to hate that city and their fans and i adore watching the clownage of all those so-called experts breathlessly calling him the best ever before the game.

I enjoyed the Super Bowl greatly…but it never captured me. I was happy the Saints won, very happy in fact, but in the end it didn’t really matter to me. I was surprised at that.

I see the Orioles found their left-handed reliever/funny name in Will Startup. This leads me to ponder two points:

    1) How is Will Startup a noted improvement over Alberto Castillo?

    2) Why are the Orioles putting themselves in a position to let Spring Training numbers affect their Opening Day roster?

  • Tomás, that George Carlin clip is hilarious. Thanks. We’re seriously lacking someone of his caliber these days.

@Chris – Heh. Then I wake up and see that Roch is telling me that this is little more than minor league depth (or what I call a nothing move). Now I feel like an asshole.

I still don’t like the idea that the Orioles are going with the “tried and true” method of seeing who has the best spring among the left handed relievers.

@Andrew – What other “tried and true” lefties are out there? There are none. Or do you just not buy that we need a lefty in the first place – if so, that makes sense I guess.

  • Andrew

@dan the man – No, I think we definitely need a lefty. I mean, if it’s Castillo then that’s fine, but outside of him, we don’t really have any left handers in the bullpen (Gonzalez doesn’t count). What I don’t like is using some minuscule sample sizes from Spring Training of all places to decide who goes and who stays. That shit never works out well.

It’s not a huge deal, I suppose, when it comes to the bullpen because most teams end up using like 16 guys or so over the course of the season, but I don’t like the methodology on principle.

Well, we just signed Will Ohman to a minor league deal, so there’s your (formally?) legit LOOGY. I like the signing – we’ll see if he can bounce back from the injuries.

I watched the puppy bowl for the first 25 minutes of the game. That french bulldog Yums… man he was fantastic at getting pressure to the quarterback.

@Greg – Puppy Bowl was awesome this year, but I question the choice of that chihuahua/pug mix for MVP. He displayed plenty of energy but I think he lacked consistency.
