Quick Thoughts On the Orioles Hot Stove

I have a longer post brewing about all things Hot Stove and Orioles-related but I don’t have it quite formulated yet. I get the sense, however, that things might get active in the next few days. In anticipation of that, a few thoughts (and a comments section that’s wide open for following the developments):

One thing I like about Dan Duquette so far is his willingness to talk. I can’t remember an O’s GM (or whatever the title is) being this present in the media with seemingly honest answers about the team’s plans. I can’t say I necessarily believe everything he’s saying but it’s nice that he’s giving the beat writers something to work with.

Anyone who still clings to the Prince Fielder dream is, well, dreaming.

It seems like the trade market is going to heat up pretty quickly. My hunch on that is that we’ll see some surprises, and I’d bet they move a guy we don’t expect them to move. Maybe not someone on the level of Adam Jones but it seems like some of the young pitchers will be in play.

Overall, I’m finding myself more intrigued than I thought I’d be at this stage. The jury will be out on Duquette for some time but early indications are that he won’t be a shrinking violet. That, in itself, makes things interesting.

LOL x 5 at the comment about DD being available to the media.

    @ df1570:
NST doesn’t really count at this point when we’re talking about media and availability. Sorry to break it to you. Irrelevant x5. Pretty sure 100% of people not working at NST agree Duquette is more accessible to the media.

I’ll humor you, Dan. I have a few minutes to kill before this Towson-LaSalle hoops game starts.

Tell me, in your words, why WNST doesn’t count…

    Just as I thought…

Any chance the O’s go after Darvish?

  • dan the man

    @ df1570:
It doesn’t count because they haven’t had real Orioles media access in years and Orioles fans have not suffered as a result of that. The radio station is struggling to keep up with other media sources like 105.7, 1300, the Sun, blogs, etc. It just doesn’t matter that Duquette doesn’t talk to you guys because who really cares? People just get their Duquette sound bites from elsewhere. And the fact that NST is the only media group complaining about lack of access means they are the only group with a lack of access, which is just funny to me. Nobody wants to play with you guys for obvious reasons.

Dana Eveland. Gross. A non-tender candidate that Dan sent two minor leaguers away for. Hmmmmm.

Miclat and Henson and two other minor league pitchers for Teagarden and Eveland. I dunnooooooo…..

Hope you’ve got more than that up your sleeve, Danny boy.

No offense, but that’s what I expected from you.

    Nothing.

    You clearly don’t get it.

But as a team Apologist, I figured you’d have little to offer.

Take how the Ravens treat the media — then take how the Orioles treat the media.

    Look at those differences.

And there is the answer you were actually looking for, my friend.

    @ dan the man:
Yeah, not even remotely impressed. One thing that MacPhail was undeniably good at was making the minor trades that more often than not ended up paying decent dividends. I’m hoping DD also has that skill, which is crucial with a lower tier team like the O’s. Am really questioning these trades so far, however. Is Eveland going to be sold to us as a starter? Ouch…

In other news, how absurd is that Pujols contract?

    Fixed for you.

This is stupid, and distracting, and lowers the quality of the comments here. I’m going to boil this down real quick and easy for everyone:
The Orioles are both not very good and not particularly easy to deal with. This has been the case for a while now, and it’s unfortunate because folks like Drew who cover sports for a living 100% deserve access, regardless of how critical they are. Period.

Meanwhile, Drew is…what’s the best way to put this?…kind of a blowhard who likes to resort to name-calling and wasn’t particularly nice to me in person, either, on the occasion that I met him. Which is fine. Entertaining even. But it does little to make a lot of folks really give a shit whether he gets his way or not.

That’s it. That’s all there is to say. I’d rather talk about the Colts game, or I guess even Dana Eveland, because those are actual things that are happening.

    @ Andrew:
Yeah, you’re right. I used to be better at not feeding the troll, but I haven’t been able to contain myself lately. I’ve always disagreed that Drew making this place more active is a good thing – I quite enjoyed his self-imposed hiatus from TLC that went on for awhile.

No, there’s no real chance the O’s even post for Darvish. I really can’t see Angelos signing off on the idea of a $100 million pitcher. I will be shocked if we learn that the Orioles posted.

  • Mike R

Dana Eveland? Career ERA well over 5.00. This will be his 7th team in 7 years. Sounds about right. Nice work. Low risk mentality. Gotta love it.

No effing way we’ll post for darvish. That has new York yankees written all over it.

Actually, all I’ve ever tried to do is offer a different perspective on the real world of sports. It’s not something you’re able to grasp because you’re too busy trying to be a critic.

And Lord knows something or someone has to liven this place up. I’ve seen morgues with more energy. Seriously — if you think sitting around in what amounts to a circle-jerk of baseball nerds is entertaining on its own merit…well…that’s your call.

Wash your hands when you’re done.

    Au Revoir.

@Neal, don’t change a thing. It’s football season. We all know the business picks up come April. Many a summertime post gets 30, 40+ comments.

@Drew, liven up your own blog. 3 comments on your article about the Ravens win. 3? You’re big time media. Neal does this for fun and gets more readers by word of mouth.

  • dan the man

    @ Mike R: Yes.

Back to actual baseball: O’s are attending Cespedes workouts today. Under MacPhail, I’d write it off as “due diligence”, but there is at least a spectre of optimism given Duquette’s international track record.

I’d be alright with Cespedes playing LF and filling in at CF. He’d be interesting to follow, at least. Maybe you let him hit in AAA for a minute. Either way, I doubt the O’s pony up what it takes to get him, but you never know.

Is anyone else following this Chris Paul trade debacle? What a complete clusterfuck. The NBA is quickly becoming a total farce. Baseball looks downright sane in comparison.

  • dan the man

    @ sci:
Yeah, dude, what the shit is going on? The NBA is such a troll. Sure, there’s a new CBA, but the league is still an absolute mess and I definitely blame Stern/the owners. He just completely screwed New Orleans – CP3 will leave via free agency for sure and they will end up with no compensation. It’s a complete joke.

    Entertaining, though.
