As a matter of civic and social responsibility, The Loss Column will take a number of official editorial positions. These positions will sometimes relate to sports, sometimes not. They will often represent the opinions of our contributors, but not always. They will usually remain consistent, but we reserve the right to change our minds as new information becomes available.

This list is a living organism.

1. The Orioles should put “Baltimore” back on the road jerseys

It’s a long road back to respectability, and this is where it should start. With the Nationals setting down roots just 40 miles to the south there is no longer room for the argument that the O’s are a “regional” team. The fans of the team — and the city as a whole — deserve to have their name and civic pride represented when the team hits the road.

2. Dale Murphy should be in the Hall of Fame

Consider the numbers: two-time National League MVP, 2111 hits, 398 HR, 5 gold gloves, led the league in HR (1984, 85) and RBI (1982, 83) twice each.

Murphy is certainly no Cal Ripken, no Mickey Mantle, no Babe Ruth. But he was a dominant force in his era, and his numbers compare quite favorably to other current Hall members (see: Duke Snider and Johnny Mize). He belongs in the Hall, and The Loss Column will not feel entirely comfortable until it happens.
